Title: Malfunction Rear View Camera
Post by: ErikGTI on 07 June 2010, 19:15
Here is my story:

After an aftermarket VW PDC instalment (dealer forgot the original to order!!!!) suddenly my rear view camera gives a black screen seconds after I pull it into reverse.....
The dealer says that's a coincidence and states he recognises the problem and blames the software and informs the importer.....

I have written an angry letter today to the importer/dealer that they sold me a non-functional rearview camera so I want compensation and a working rearviewcamera as quick as possible.....I think I am screwed since it is now June and the camera problems dates from the beginning of this year (to be read on fora....)

How is my legal situation....

Any fellow-victims outthere.....

Well am1w it is not over yet...

Mind you they solved the ..uhhh...first problem the forgotten PDC quite generously...with a expensive remap (incl. lease adjusting 3035 euro) and a now propper working rear PDC....

So it is the camera as my main concern...get it working and get compensation...I have suggested PDC in the front...(as actually originally ordered) I know they cannot get that afterwards...... so my aim is that it becomes slowly but surely their problem....i

I wish you the very best of British luck!
You need to get your rear end functioning quickly as you might damage it in the heat of the moment. Easily done. :embarassed:

Im also having problems with my retro fitted rear view camera.

Sometimes the screen goes black or doesnt work at all and then displays german maps!! but hopefully my new LED sat nav unit will cure all that. :smug:

I do try. But it's difficult when you're an R owner (on a GTI forum).

Slightly off topic, Erik, but how come your VW dealer gave you an 'official', VW-approved remap when we are hearing that VW have themselves bumped up the security on the engine managment system to stop us all getting our cars remapped?

I think because in the Netherlands the dealers widely advertise with this ABT remap possibility...
(ABT has the codes since this is their VW House-Tuner).

My dealer gave it to me to compensate for his mistakes.....for him only 2 hours laptopwork and for me the equivalent of 1400 euro's.

Speaking OFF-Topic...anyone a trick to remove decals and logos....I want to get rid of the Shark (double sticky tape) ...I have to many stickers on my car slightly chav... :embarassed:.

Take a hair dryer, blast the offending sticker/badge until it's almost too hot to touch, then pry it off using a Teflon kitchen spatula, or else 'saw' it off using some dental floss. Works a treat

Oh why or why did you take the GTi logo off?
You should have placed the ABT logo below the tail light on the boot and on the other side or across this opposite side in line with the GTi logo, IMO. :lipsrsealed:

Can't you read a road map?

Hello Ziggy, whoops Gizzy.
No I bloody can't as I am short sighted, long sighted with spectacles, can't wear those clever lenses with auto focus, over bloody 40, cannot spell, get names wrong regularly, won't break the law reading a map whilst driving, like the look of an expensive sat nav, like to be ordered by a woman on where to steer, want to spend my money to help the economy and before Ossie finds new ways of milking me and need to find the way to your hearth and into your heart.

And what's all this to do with a rear view camera beats me to a pulp. :embarassed:

Nope the car is unmistakably a GTI (due to the double exhaust location)
so mentioning in black ABT indicates all you need...THE EXTRA SPEED...to frustrate the regualar GTI drivers...

No honestly the looks are now better...that is in the end all that matters

Glad you got the badges off, but I agree that the ABT lettering isn't in the best position. Further down and to the left would have looked better, IMO, although, TBH, I wouldn't have put it on in the first place

I left it as it is in order not to take further risks...and any place lower the lid starts to curve.....

Both your advice is appriciated but I am quite happy how it looks, it stands out just a little bit and in real live it is even.... (er)

BTW
Not many drivers get to see it on the motorway anyway

To get back on topic  Its possibly 1 of 2 things either the video cable from the camera to the headunit?  or the fuse/wiring? if the retro fitted camera is been scotch locked onto other wires then possibly not making a very good connection?

All the wiring needs checking and the video cable needs checking at the camera side,  just take the rear boot panel off and you will see all the wiring in the camera.

I think my malfunction is software ( I came across this as I am also to be found on the dutch GTI forum)...when you put in in reverse you get the camera working for about say 5 seconds before the black screen appears...

The dealer said he contacted the importer....He also said he has to present them some sort of readout of my car. Something called DIS
On my request to inform them about my situation in detail the dealer said that this was enough.
Since I disagree I emailed them very detailed and asking for compensation since they sold me a non proper functioning rear camera in April and still not solved it in June be it with software...I do not really care actually).

There must be guys outthere with simular problems ...I think (although the dealer saids NO) it is related to there aftermarket PDC in combination with the camera..
Very easy to conclude since they repaired the PDC and the problem occurs....you have to have BIG BALLS to claim it is sheer coincidence.
I will not leave it with that....

Eric have a look on vwnavi.com and look through the RVC topics you may find what your looking for?

I've just retrofitted my mk6 badge camera in my mk5 but just waiting for my LED RNS510 then i can see about any coding issues?
