Title: After a MK4 - Need advice!
Post by: G60Limited on 07 June 2010, 11:13
Hi guys, I'm really after a MK4 GTI (non turbo) and want some advice on them

Ideally I'm after a 1.8 NA, as I've heard the 2.0 is SLOW.

However, I'm also considering a 1.6S, are these any good? What is the performance like compared to the 1.8 NA?

Also, I'm looking to spend no more than 1600 - am I living in a dream world?

Whilst I can't believe I'm typing this, £1600 would get you a bloody good Golf3 16V, probably with air-con etc if you shop carefully.

This would probably provide you with a lot more entertainment than a G4, of any of those flavours.

The 1.8 NA is technically faster than the 2.0, but neither are actually "fast".

I wouldnt bother with the 1.6S and if need be save a tiny bit more for a 1.8. Is there any reason other than budget for not getting a 1.8T?

For that price I would imagine your looking at 100k plus.

  are you feeling ok.

Would a better bet than a mk4 n/a 1.8 or 2.0

One has to move with the times and be realistic when discussing someone's requirements.

Let's face it, the Golf4 is the Golf3's chubby sister.

How does that translate car-wise?

I'm after a MK4 because it's newer, and more relaible. A MK3 would be nice, however I've got a MK2 at the moment and after spending nearly £3K for the car and repairs in the last two years - want relaiblity. I just don't know if a Golf3 will give me that.

The reason I can't afford a turbo is the insurance - trust me, i'd love one.

lol just what I was going to say :D

A MK4 thats done over 100k could well be just as bad as your MK2 if its not been looked after.

Yep as your going to find a nice car for your budget, a mk4 will be a struggle.

iv got both

mk3 every time

thing is, buy a crap unloved  mk 2, 3, 4 etc and it will have its problems

my mk4 was bought brand new and it has had alot of electrical issues, mostly wiring harness type problems, annoying stuff

my mk 3 was bought 4 year ago, didnt know its history or anything and cost peanuts really, and its never once let me down.. makes the mk4 look sh!t really  the mk4 is alot faster tho but its a derv with a remap, had a 1.8t Mk4 before that and it was slow, about as slow as my 8v mk 3, and before that i had a mk 4 2.0 and that was slow too, nice to drive just slow

What insurance group is the Golf3 16v. Bearing in mind i'm driving a Golf2 8V and it's costing around a grand at next renewall.

So anyone know what insurance group the MK2 8V is? I'm hoping it'll only be a little bit lower than the MK3 16V and I can get that one!
