Title: Stranger than fiction! My car is 'clocking' itself!
Post by: am1w on 06 June 2010, 19:01
(1) Last Saturday on 29th May, when I had my oil and filter change I checked the oddometer before the oil change, and it read 1440 miles.
However, the service receipt said I had done 1140 miles! That is a 300 mile difference! However, I did not think too much about this as maybe I had made a mistake or they had. Easily done.

(2) This Saturday on the 5th June, when I had the gearbox additive put in, the oddometer read 1150 miles as did the receipt. Alarm bells started ringing!

Between the 2 Saturdays I have covered around 18 miles per day which makes it a total of 133 miles. So the oddometer should read 1273 miles!  Well it does not and says I have covered 10 miles in a week even though I have driven the car every day to and from work!

My car seems to be clocking itself in a most outrageous manner by approx 423 miles!

Any ideas please?

Seriously Neil, its not funny any more regarding this self clocking. I covered 30 miles since yesterday and the oddometer is at 1155 miles! So 30 miles has been recorded as 5 miles!
I thought I was going mad!
No alcohol until Wednesday evening and then only a small glass of red as a celebration!

PS: Fcuk it, I'm going to have a glass in my new wine glass I bought from Harrods!
This is all your fault.

Very straaaange, keep a rough milage check and get it back to the dealers

Atleast when it comes to resale it will have low milage

We can scan the car on Wednesday with VCDS to see what the ECU believes the mileage to be

That would work out at approx 32,000 miles per annum!

My guess it's a software bug., and is probably affecting a whole range of VAG products.

But mainly, who's going to notice??  I can't remember the last time I glanced at my odo !!

You could also do that thing (can't quite recall exact sequence) to bring up the service indicator and see if that's going backwards too.

And from a physics point of view of course you must bear in mind that time can run backwards, it's just very very very very unlikely. Unless of course you are in a Volkswagen or a DeLorean...hahahahahahahaha

Have seen the problem before and is in most cases a faulty speedo head.

I have now worked out to the nearest 20 miles how much distance I would have covered since the 22nd March when I took delivery of Wolfgang. Yes, I am that anal!
The oddometer now reads 1276 miles. Which is about correct by my calculations.
However, it still does not explain why it showed readings of (1) 1400, 1550, 1600 miles and (2)  that I had only covered 10 miles in one week of commuting.
Anyway, as long as it behaves itself as of now, I will not stress.
Yes, Wolfgang is still a red blooded male!

But mainly, who's going to notice??

Howabout a lease company...suddenly your car is doing very few miles to the gallon...that will definitely wake up a few fleet-owners...anyway besides speed it now will make you feel like you own a Rolls...
