Title: Polo brakes 2002 any ideas?
Post by: dTEA on 06 June 2010, 17:24
Right hope somone can help. My brother is running my mothers old polo and the brakes are mad spongy. The servo was changed and for a while the ABS stayed on but it went in to the dealership to sort.

Interestingly they had a load of the parts in stock?

The fluid reservoir is full to the very top...is/was there ever a maximum level on these reservoirs?

It's a 2002 1.4 16v engine code I can't figure but I'll get a pic later of the sticker if needed.

Plus check for any fluid leaks at each wheel and around the master cylinder, including the carpet in the footwell etc.

Resevoir should be between min and max indicators on the side of the container.

They were proper sharp before the cylinder failed. So not normal IMO.

No leaks at all, BUT the reservoir is almost overflowing which didn't look right? Could that be the cause?

Too much shouldn't cause sponginess, if the brakes are anything like mk4 golf ones they are a pain to get right, trust me, have a look in the mk4 section in the maint and info bit, there is a guide for mk4 ones.

my girlfriends polo has spongey brakes too!! It is a bit older than yours (1999) but i changed all the discs and pads and bled the system and they were still the same, ive decided that polos just have crap brakes!

 man...this is not right...these were soooo sharp previously, until the failure, and i reckon its still the set up.  DH's comments still seem right, but my bro's call.

Nah, there is a woman at his works also had this problem...seems like dealership were expecting a run of these as they had loads of parts in stock which the parts man said was unusual

When bleeding the brakes was the ABS unit cycled to get rid of the air that may have got in ? not sure if that would make a difference or not to normal braking, but worth a thought.

Took four goes and 1.5 litres of fluid to get my brakes bled on Saturday, would have cost a bomb in a Garage.
I would say take it back tell them its naff and to sort it, no brakes should be spongey

+1
I think on polo's about that year the ABS unit can be cycled using VAG-com.
It could well be air trapped in the ABS unit.
My mum has a 2000 polo, the brakes are rock solid on that.
