Yep, the 310 looks sh!t and the 510 amazing.

W-I-N-N-E-R!
PS: Will the Sat Nav find me a way into your heart?

You know I'm buying the L-A-T-E-S-T RNS 510 from Darren.
If you want the LATEST RNS510, make sure you get an LED version :nerd:

It's the latest version of that I am sure. Hence the wait!

yes its better than the 310 by far gossa, but for the money its well overpriced, the nav is poor & fiddly, there are far better systems out there for less money!!
I would rather have Xenons than a 510 next time anyways??

Latest Kenwood or Pioneer?

Yesterday I was test driving a Mini Cooper Works - and if you think the VW Sat Nav is fiddly, then you'd LOVE the Mini's one!
Its controlled by a little joystick and 2 buttons - which means inputting an address takes AGES! The VW one is so simple in comparison with its touch screen.
As OEM systems go, the RNS510 is a fantastic bit of kit. Yes, its overpriced from the factory, but a decent retrofit for around £550 is a bargain. It has the advantage over many other OEM systems that it has a hard drive built in - and as a result you can still play CD's since you don't need a Nav DVD in all the time
Difference between the RCD310 and 510...
I don't think there is any sound differences - but the 510 has a built in 6 CD changer, the obvious Touch Screen which looks better and makes MP3 / iPod functionality much simpler. It also has the ability to display optical parking sensors, climate control, and a reverse cam. Well worth the £380 factory upgrade if you have no need for the RNS510.

The differences are listed here (http://www.my-gti.com/719/differences-between-the-volkswagen-rcd-210-rcd-310-rns-310-rcd-510-and-the-rns-510)
The RNS510 as retrofit is a bargain. It is certainly on par if not better than any TomTom I have used. It is however let down by no audible POI alert, which means you aren't alerted to any speed cameras

At last someone with a sensible answer maybe I should have asked this question in the first place im not bothered about all the gadets im into the sound qulaity so rather than spending all that money on an head unit I was going to get a sound processor then put that through an amp and uprate speakers will this give me same quality wheter i have 310 or 510 i think answer is yes not botered about 6 cd dont use cd
-
As I have said before, I am setting mine up with a very espensive vinyl turntable. Analogue rules! The ACC is there to smooth the ride!

If its just for sound quality, then stick with the RCD310, as its the same sound processor.
I forgot to add the SD card onto my list of differences - but I guess that doesn't really matter.
I think the RCD510 just has a much nicer presence in the dash, and the screen is much more user friendly.
-
The RCD510 does have a better presence in the dash than the RCD310. Hooked up to the dynaudio package it's pretty impressive too and worth the money for factory fitted equipment.
Although my headunit has developed a fault where it turns itself on and off, repeatedly, just happened today for the first time....
-
One question: Is the RNS510's amplifier better and more powerful than that of the RCD310/510?

I'm pretty sure they're all the same.
The only way you get better sound from the factory options is to opt for the Dynaudio pack... or fit some aftermarket speakers / amps!

Then the RNS510 may not be what I am after.
I have heard a Kenwood fitted to a standard Golf GTi loudspeaker system and it was quite a revelation. It made a worthwhile difference to the overall sound quality. Additionally, the Kenwood's facia is removable.
Also, the microphone for the integrated Parrot Bluetooth was an active one and fitted inside the overhead light housing. The Bluetooth could be paired with both the Blackberry Bold 9700 as well as iPhone 3GS. I have them both.
The company below is willing to give me a good deal and have fitted a number of Mk6 Golfs.

£1,399.99
Bargain!!!!
It won't display on the MFD like the RNS510 and I can't see any mention of it working with the MFSW although I'd imagine it should.
For the money I don't think it offers that much more over the RNS

I don't really care about the MFD etc
I have a car with standard speakers, which I will not upgrade. To get the best out of them the Kenwood amplifiers would provide the better drive.
I am not too bothered by the intricate fripparies you guys find fascinating.
I want a built-in Sat Nav, the latgest screen possible to install in the console, Bluetooth Connectivity for both my iPhone and Blackberry, a hidden active microphone in the overhead light console, a removable facia for security and powerful built-in amplifiers to provide good sound quality from the standard speakers.
Do you not think the Kenwood fits the bill?
PS: It does also work perfectly with MFSW!

Yes as the RCD310/RCD510/RNS510 all use the same amplifier chip the TA7564
You will have to find someone who knows how to setup a system properly (rare imo) if you go the processor route as you may make it worse.
Im doing this myslef and am actually currently waiting for my JBL MS-8 to be shipped from the states
An advantage of the RCD310 over the 510 is simply it does not look like a satnav to a tealeaf so your less likley to see your car with a smashed window screw driver'ed dashboard and your hadunit on ebay. Which im told is very common sight at the moment in my neck of the woods. (Thanks VW for making it so easy to remove  )

Hence the removeable front panel of the Kenwood.
What do you think, Snoops?

The Dynaudio does make the RNS510 sound very nice, me I just struggle with the Nav a bit !! Maybe nice to have something diffierant than the 510??

Kenwood seems ok, what do you think?
Imagine if you struggle with the RNS 510, what a mess I would be in.
Off to VW now for what I spoke about!
-
The removable face has been a god send on some of my older cars where I could park it anywhere and take the face off and not worry. I had a nice Alpine one IDA-X001 I think, where a little pannel with the buttons came off - nice and neat, but obvious. Fitted in your jacket pocket.
Now... a double DIN with a face off. Thats a pretty new concept for most manufacturers. I know JVC did it a couple of years ago, but it must be new for Kenwood. Unless you have a pretty big handbag - where are you going to put the face?!
Yes, you can remove the face and stick it under your seat or in the glove box... but I bet the tea leafing ba$tards are aware of these tricks and know that you're unlikely to be carrying a 7" widescreen panel around in your pocket!
The Kenwood system looks good on paper. It has better features than the RNS510 - but then you lose out on the OEM look. I guess the MDI in the armrest will become redundant too?
I remember Hurdy changed his standard stereo for a Kenwood one, and then found he had to update all his speakers as the sound wasn't great. Might be worth asking him about it.
-
^ That maybe because the mk5 has a built in eq on the headunit

TBH i'm not really up on sound systems AM1, but it sounds very nice to me , I think if you get the 510 got to be dynaudio system!! The nav I dont really use on mine, becuse I know where i'm going anyway
-
Each to their own. If it will sound a lot better then definitely go for it. I'd imagine though that to get the best out of the system then you would have to change the speakers as well as surely they would be the limiting factor?
I'm with p3eps. Most scumbag would put the window in in the off chance you have left the faceplate in the car or it is some sort of motorised faceplate that spins round on taking the ignition keys out. (I had this on a Kenwood but don't think it fooled anyone). Even if they took the unit without the faceplate, there are ways to get one. Ebay being just one of them.
-
Thanks to all of you for really helpful advice and the time spent giving it. I am very grateful.
The 'tea leave's are a real worry especially in Central London. Maybe a notice that there is no faceplate to steal might help?
This will be the last of my retro-fits apart from a possible re-map. Obviously, lots of advice and help will be requested from all of you, that is if you don't mind.
I will have to come to a decision re the Sat Nav in the next few days. This is what happens because I did not spec the car properly in the first place. Silly sod me!
Very hot in London today.

This is what you want!!
Its laughable but would probably work!!!

You obviously never read the link. It is meant to be awful!!!

am1W what you want mate is what im getting. Its security film for your windows. Its like tint film but thicker and when the window gets broken it holds the glass in one bit so make it harder to do a smash and grab. Ive had it on my last few cars including the mk1.

Brilliant.
But some of these 'tea leaves' will go for this too as it will sell well in the 4th world!
I'll have to consider Snoops suggestion of a security film. It will also probably make the car quieter too.
-
How much does it cost roughly to Supaglass a 5 door Golf, Snoops????
-
Don't know yet waiting for two people to let me know.

Possibly stolen, or from crashed cars, or reject units that have been repaired with new faceplates ...... it's endless.
Get a brand new one of the latest type with LED screen from Mortygt140 for £750 as part of a 'Group Buy' (GB). He's taking orders now!
