I had previous problems with the thermostat housing, which i hope have been fixed. During this period the fan was coming on just after the car has started, having replaced the thermostat housing, the fan still seems to come when the car isnt at running tempreture........ Any ideas anyone ?????? I was thinking about tempreture switch or something similar.........Im no expert :smiley: To be honest im not sure if this is a problem or not, also the fan seems to be noisier than others i have had?

I'm new to GTis too but I suspect this is your air-con fan (the smaller of the two fans) running.
I was surprised how noticeable it is.
The small fan on mine comes on when the air con is on and off when the button's in the 'econ' position (air con off).

Thank you for your help Tuscan Thunder, I am goin to investigate more in the morning to see if thats it, hopefully it is and not something else. I dare say i will be back in touch with something else !!!! Actually i think i have a rear wheel bearing gone !!!

I have found that the fan was coming on when the car is cold first thing, also when the car was around 50 deg ??? I find it a little strange that this is happenin. I have replaced the thermosat housing as this was leaking slightly.... but the fan still comes on ?? someone help !!!!!!

hi again mate, every chance its the coolant temp sensor (G62) at fault. done a few on the mk5 range. the sensor goes faulty internally and tricks the ecu into giving it the wrong engine temp. hence causing the fan to cut in

haha i think off hand there around £30, it sits into a coolant hose at the right hand side of the engine up the top. remove the engine cover and look above where the gearbox joins the engine. you will see a black plastic horseshoe clip holding in place in its housing. if you change it, ensure the car isnt warm as you will burn your hand in roasting hot coolant. open the coolant reservoir lid too. quite a bit of coolant will pour out so have the new sensor ready to go in as soon as you remove the old one to prevent losing much coolant then its just a case of topping the reservoir up with some water

I cant guarentee this will cure your problem though, its just what i reckon the likeliest cause is, going from what ive came across before. You could try phoning that place in inverness and explain its a coolant/engine temp sensor your after and is fitted into a housing on coolant hoses found at the side of the cylinder head.
If the sensor is playing up, it can also cause poor starting in coldish weather

The fan coming on all the time really annoys the wife.........
I really do hope this solves the problem, like you said you cant guarentee it but if its only £30 its worth the chance, put it this way the wife would spend more at the shops...... I owe you a pint if i ever meet you !

just guna poke my nose in ha colin dont suppose youv had any in with bad starting problems.. its pretty much only ever first thing in the morning i go to start it and it sort of like skips a beat or 2 and then strikes up fine and carnt fault how it drives or runs once its going. its strange coz it not like a missfire, best way to describe it is, its like trying to start a diesel without glow plugs but not as bad as that ha one of my friends works at vw but hes abit of a spiv and slow so dont even think he was listen to me.

its no problem at all mate, just happy to help out. ill get the part number first thing in the morning and ill either update this thread or pm it to you around half 8 in the morning. as you say though, its not the most expensive thing in the world to give a shot. ive saw them go faulty on the mk5 before so theres a possible chance this is the problem, hopefully.
I'll also have a look on elsa to see if anything pops up in relation the problem

sounds like a possible cam position sensor to me mate, right on top of the cam cover usually. cant picture the sensor on the gti though. basically the car uses the crank position sensor (back of the gearbox) to start the car using the pick up off the flywheel and the cam position sensor allows it to start straight away as soon as you turn the key. If the cam sensor acts up, it can cause it to be a bit harder to start sometimes, a bit like taking an extra crank or two to get it going. theres not been many in for poor starting though that I can think of off hand.

06A 919 501A is the part number your after Robin mate. The head of the sensor should be black when the plug is removed off of it and there should be 2 wires going to it. You can look at the plug when it's off the sensor to make sure there are 2 terminals on it. I'll have a look on elsa for you shortly

Well changed the coolant temp sensor...................... and low and behold the same problem persists !! :angry: :angry: :angry: :angry: :angry:
