Title: Stupid Noise
Post by: zdebx on 02 June 2010, 19:03
I don't even know why I'm starting this thread, because I find it hard to explain my problem, but anyway....

Basically, I hear a noise coming from the front, as if the wheels were rubbing on the arches, but actually it's all clear.

Took it to a local garage, and the guy pointed at the loose alternator belt cover, that came off from the clip. So I got that fixed, but I still get the sound.

Any ideas what it could be? I just can't think of anything. Also the sound is similar to when a wheel is not straight and it wobbles, but mine are all ok.

I had a noise like this once. It turned out to be a plastic splash shield on one of the inner cv joints had come loose and was rubbing on the joint itself, so I just unbolted it and took it off.

Seized top mount?

Seized top mount?

Nah, they're new, like a month old.

Wheel bearing or that shield might be the issue.

Are you sure the wheels are not rubbing on the shocks or arch.

disks rubbing on the disk sheilds?  :undecided:

Could be any of the above..

When did this start happening? Since the wheel change? or suspension change?

Jack it up shake the wheel to check for wobble and then roll the wheel forwards and backwards to see if you can hear or see it catching on anything.

have a feel round the arches for the sheilds as mine came loose and i had to take it off.

Other then that, i would say check the exhaust for perished rubber mounts maybe?  :undecided:

It is worth remembering that with it jacked up you may have more clearance with no weight on the susp.

It started happening after I got it lowered, i.e. fitted the coilovers.

When I got the tracking done, the guys said the wheels are clear, so I'm assuming it's not that.

Take a wheel off and look for rubbing marks, coild be really small but would still make a lot of noise.

Also worth having a look when someone is in the car. Don't forget that the car will drop down a bit with the added weight (get yer biggest mate in there to be sure ;) )
There is a metal shield behind the break disk (already mentioned I think) hard to see it rubbing with the wheel on, but that could also be it.

i heard of a similar problem with punto gt's.the bearings where the driveshafts bolt on were worn due to too much stress after lowering and give in .... just an idea
