ok, I had a test drive of a mk4 TDI and a Beetle TDI today and they both where great fun, but I don't know what to go for. I'm going to change suspension and wheels as soon as I choice which one and get the car chipped as well.
What shall I do..... (It's my xmas present to myself...!!)
Golf or Beetle?
-
I would go for the golf tdi mate, the beetle is to much of a hairdressers car lol
-
stupid question! golf of course! unless you're a girl or a bit light in your loafers!!!!
-
WTF kind of question is that for a Golf site?
Get a grip on reality
GOLF
-
your all forgetting one thing, where you gonna put your single flower in a golf? eh

I think in its standard form the beetle can look a little feminine, however, drop it, and toss on some Porsche rims and they look great, especially in black.
The Golf has been replaced now, so not only is it not the lastest generation (something that the beetle isn't guilty of) but it will depreciate quicker as the market is flooded with people trading up to Mk5.
Makes me laugh how people slag the beetle off - its just a Golf in a different set of clothes, same as Scirrocco was, same as Corrado was - I don't hear people slagging them off.
Go for the Beetle, stick on coilovers, Porsche rims and a Re-map and go blow some GTi's away mate
-
And you can't call a golf herbie
-
yeah i get your point about them being the same underneath but would you rather have a car that says your sexuality is questionable or one that says you drive a golf? and as the mk5 is out that will also mean he could pick up a golf cheaper now than he could a year ago. even when beetles are done up i still can't help but think they should have done it to a golf instead!

The replies are great.. thanks
u have to remember I've had quite a few golfs in my time and most have been custom mk1 cabs or mk1 camps, so I want to do something different for my daily driver..... Also note I already have a mk1 cab project and a polo Mk4 and l'll be looking for a mk2 next year as well, so I feel the beetle is the winner here as I need something different, but I'll hold fire until Jan 05 so I can really push the price down more and also I want to see what else you have to say.... This site rocks....

i remember reading that the beetle was louder inside the cabin than a golf (and virtually any other car) as the windscreen goes over part of the engine bay.
with an oil burning tractor unit under the hood, it could become annoying.

as the mk5 is out that will also mean he could pick up a golf cheaper now than he could a year ago.
True, but its when the Mk5's start to appear on the used market that they really affect the used values of the Mk4's, and the will (for a VW) drop like a stone. It nearly always happens. He will loose more money on a gOlf than he will on a Beetle, guaranteed.
There are only a few cars that I know of when the outgoing model has commanded a higher premium than its replacement (Subaru is one of them, when it launched the Bugeye in '01).
