Title: Wheel refurb help
Post by: Lewisf1988-DUB on 31 May 2010, 15:52
Hi guys, lookin to refurb my alloys as they are in a real state :( couple of questions:

best way to strip old paint from alloys and plastic center caps? (nitro-morse, sanding, other stripper?)

best filler to use for sorting kerbing damage?

Best way to spray, how many coats?

My main consern is the plastic center caps as I dnt think nitro morse will help, it will probs melt them haha

any help would be great an any other advise that u think I need :)

I looked into this when i did mine,

Your options are...

Paint Removal - Nitro mors, bead/sand blast, sand down alot! Haha

Filler - Depending on how deep the scratches are, lighht ones i would use body filler, and for deeper stuff something like a chemical metal then sand that flat back.

Painting - 2 Coats of Etch Primer, 2 Coats Filler Primer, 2 - 3 Colour of your choice, Then 2 to 3 of Lacquer.

I'm sure some people have different methods, thats just how i would do it.

As I have access to compressor, sand blasting etc, i would go about that route, and maybe not even lacquer it dependant on what typer of top coat i used. I.E Acrylic, Poly, 2 Pack etc.

I did mine not so long ago mate, here's the link of how I did it along with pics.......http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=147377.0 As for the centre caps, why not just buy new ones from Ebay, should be know more than £20 delivered, or if that's to much, you can get the correct size rubber stickers to go on top of your existing caps for a fiver delivered!!

Hope that helps matey
