I took delivery of my first GTI last Friday and since have only covered 250 miles and I'm loving it so far especially the looks with the 18" monzas and the handling is great. But I have a few questions...in the manual it says on the MFD it shows the speed digitally but I cannot find this in the menu options?
I opted for the xenons which are fantastic but can you turn off so you don't have to run them all the time as DRL's?
I'm sure there will be other things that pop up but any help would be appreciated... Off for a drive to get a few more miles on so I can start to open her up more!

Not sure I can answer your questions TBO, but come on lets have some pics of your new motor. Congrat's by the way and welcome to the forum.

Thanx MAW73, yeah for sure I will get out with the camera this w/end to get some shots, only got a couple of iPhone ones at presnt which aren't great!

KMH should be displayed constantly on the MFD. There isn't an option to turn it on or off in the menu options. You need VAG.COM for that. Likewise I think the DRL's with xenons can only be turned off and on with VAG.COM but may be wrong here. Without xenons you can do it via the indicator stock.
-
Thanx for your reply. How do you turn the DRLs off?? I must admit I'm puzzled over the mph not being shown as it does say that in the manual it should be there but it just ain't!!! Vag is that the main dealer or something I can do?
-

Eh? I just told you
VAG.COM is software that can access your cars electronics and change things.
The software itself is free  the cable however to use it is about £250 from Ross Tech (http://www.ross-tech.com/index.html)
-
You don't need VAGCOMto turn the DRLs off, it tells you somewhere in the manual how to do it. Some sort of combination of holding down the indicator switch while turning the ignition key, or something...
-
^ That does not work with Xenons from a certain date  . I think build week 46 last year iirc.
You need for the dealer to turn them off with his computer or buy the Rosh Tech VAGCOM program and lead to DIY it.
You may also notice unlike non xenon equipped cars your rear lights may also probably on for DRLs.
As for the digital display if you check type approval for UK cars its law for both MPH and KPH to be able to be displayed. (Other cars its on the speedos by having two different scales shown) So VW set the digital display to only show KPH in the uk to comply with the law. Remember the manuals not just for the UK but every English/American speaking country

I bet you've been itching to clean your new car.....been crap weather today for it.

Cheers for the info. Guys. Snoopy your right I have just checked, the rear lights are on with the xenons as drl's! I guess I may be contacting my dealer to sort this! As far as the mfd I don't have any speed displayed only the average speed oil temp etc etc...
and your spot on MAW it's dirty now!! Have to crack out the carnuba tomorrow if it's dry!!
Just love driving more and more though it's more fun to drive than the tts I had before.

DRL's can be turned off, well they can on mine. Put key in ignition, Pull indicator stalk towards you and up. Hold in that position. Turn ignition on for several seconds and then switch off. Release stalk and DRL's should be off. To turn them on again it is the dame procedure but pull the stalk towards you and down. Hope this helps.
-
The problem is it does not work from a certain build date when xenons are fitted.
So does your MFD display look different to mine?

Aha, must be down to the build date then. Mine was built in '09.
Initially when I tried to turn off my DRL's As per manual it wouldn't work. so I went along to my VW dealer and they refused to turn them off, stating that is was an inbuilt safety feature and they wouldn't do it! Then I found out via the forums how to turn them on/off. Forums are great!!
No, my MFD is exactly the same as yours
-
dave7268 If how to turn them off was posted on this forum or a few other UK forums it was probably me who posted it
The photo of the display was for the original poster 'Martw' sorry for confusing you with that, im not very good in written words explaining what i meen. :embarassed:
-
 No problems Snoopy. Was kinda wondering about the MFD question!
Yes, it was on another forum that I found the info and if that was your post then "kudos" to you, it was a great post!

Your mpg is pretty good. You seem to be getting nearly 350 miles on a full tank. That is 120 miles more than me! I've done 1140 miles so far.

am1w.... just fyi 318.6 miles to 48.78Ltrs(10.73gal) = 29.69mpg and the mfd computer says 32mpg, it lies. Thats all comuter work into Newcaste everyday over the tyne as i have not used it for anything else.

Mine lies too and a bit more than yours.
Car used only in heavy stop/start traffic.
50 litres = 11.1 gallons for 220 miles.
That is just shy of 20mpg. Computer says 25mpg average.
Not a happy bunny.

I would ask the dealer to put the oringnal map back on the car, to get MPG as it should be?? Got give a try or get it mapped

Maybe I am an overly enthsiastic driver?

cheers Snoopy, no it doesn't but I haven't noticed the kmh at the bottom, I'll check tomorrow and I should be posting some pics to as I've cleaned her today. I'll let you know after my investigations... Still new to the car so not up to speed with everything!!
-

That is the speed displayed that the manual refers to. I'd be surprised if it wasn't there. If not they must have set your car up for another country!
-
Ah ha! Yes it is the same display!! Shame it's not in mph and u can't set that as an option :-( I have read in another thread the mfd can be changed to mph? Does this affect anything else and you can also programme the windows to shut via the light/rain sensor? Is this something a dealer has to do??
-
You mean like this on mine?

This doesn't affect anything else.
Yes you can program the windows / sunroof to close if the rain comes on.
A dealer probably could do it but I don't think they would. Best way is getting a hold of a cable and doing it yourself.
-
Yeap that looks good nice and clear similar to what I had on my tt before. The dealers don't seem to like to do much do they I went to see them to see if they could turn my xenons off as drl's but they said it can't be done!! Do you know anyone in south Devon who's good at these vag things as I haven't a clue. I would obviously pay some bucks!!
-
You could ask in here. (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=73.0)

Cheers. I'll try and upload some pics tomorrow as I spent most of today cleaning her
