Hi - hoping for some help please!
Our 8v has got a torrential oil leak ... changing the oil and filter has not helped - the leak appears to be coming from *around* the oil filter housing.

What sort of things I should be looking for, many thanks for all and any help.
Cheers!

Hi, thanks for the reply!
Is it as simple as undoing the hex bolts, clean off both faces, then put new gasket in, and do the bolts back up?
-
yep it is that simple, also while you've got it off check that the bit that the filter screws onto is tight in the housing as well. it is threaded on both ends and is held tight by a locknut but it may have worked loose.

Just did this on my 16V, gasket was the problem, also renew the top seal (if you have one on it :)
-
Thanks guys ... hope to get it done in the next week or so ... will report back
-
And while you're at it get a genuine VAG oil filter

All sorted now ... car also sprung a big coolant leak the day after my original post, and had a lot of other work in the 'must get it seen to list' so took it to the local VW Specialist for:
- Oil Leak Fix (was a pressure switch + the gasket round the filter housing)
- New rocker box gasket (this was leaking at the back)
- New plastic coolant junction thingy on the front of the engine
- New alternator belt
- New power steering pump belt
- New engine thermostat (car didn't heat up enough - and ran too cold on motorways, bit of mayo in the filler cap)
- New brake fluid
- New dipstick (don't ask, it wasn't me that broke it)
Now car is toasty, and for the first time the Thermotronic heating system actually works!
For ?256 inc collection and delivery.
Now to try and convince better half that she should occasionally look under the bonnet ... and hope I don't get complaints from the neighbours for the oilslick outside our house :embarassed:
