Hello there, been in my mk3 1.4 for almost a year now and as my 1 year ncb is approaching a new car is definatly in order. Someones offered me a mk3 1.8 SE but im not sure whether to turn it down and go for a mk2 1.6, i'm leaning towards another mk3 but is a mk2 gonna be any faster ?
Advice much appreciated

if its "faster" thats more important to you at a guess i would say that mk2 would be faster. just for the pure fact that its lighter.
-
Well either of them are definatly gonna be faster than my 1.4, but do you think a 1.6 mk2 would be significantly faster than a mk3 1.8 ? and am i right in saying theres much more i can do to the mk2 engine vs. the ABZ of the mk3 ?
-
Putting the mk2 vs mk3 debate aside, if you want the 1.8 SE then 1 years NCB won't do much to bring your premium down mate. Just food for thought on whether you are happy to pay more on the insurance

have a drive of both and see which you prefer. I don't know what advice, other than that, that you are looking for.

The Mk2 1.6 engine is about 75bhp right ? And the later Mk3 1.8 engines were 90bhp (early ones were 75bhp, like the AAM). So 15bhp difference. But the Mk2 is lighter and even with stock suspension will handle better, which is great for having fun on the twisty roads.
You can mod the Mk2 1.6, swap to a weber carb and swap the cam for starters, but it's not worth spending too much cos you can buy a 1.8 8v GTI engine to put in it for very little these days.

Why not a Golf2 1.8 Driver?
-
I would pick a mk2 over the mk3.

I would pick a mk2 over the mk3.
watch it now, a mk3 owner may question why!!!

Well the choice between a 1.8SPI mk3 or a 1.6 / 1.8 mk2 is simple it has to be the mk2, mk3 feels very flat.

To be honest i wasn't aware a mk2 1.8 driver existed, it may well be the answer to my problem. Does it only come as 4+E or do they come in 3 door aswell ? there doesnt seem to be many around mind.
-
all drivers are 4+E, but 4+e is a gearbox that was fitted to 3 and 5 door drivers
-
ahh i seeee. Thanks for filling me in haha well a 1.8 mk2 is cheaper to insure than a 1.8 mk3 so that seems like enough of a reason to me. faster and cheaper, let the search begin....
-
My 1.8 driver was same to insure as a 106 1.1 when I was 18.

i know i totally agree i was only joking after the stuff that kicked off when i started the Selling MK3s thread.

My first car was a Mk2 Golf 1.8 GL. So it was the 90bhp engine, which is plenty. It had the twin headlamp grill and sunroof. So long and you didn't mind the luxurious velour interior it was great.
The Mk2 Driver is a Mk2 Golf made to look similar to the GTI, (eg lights, sportier seats, spoiler) but with either the 1.6 or 1.8 carb engine, so it's cheaper to insure than the GTI.

and you can stick a gti top end on it and it'll do 120mph
