What do people know about them?
Just seen this, shot on a Canon SLR with one:

It's NOT a model. That's real life.

pretty cool stuff i read a tutorial on how to make tilt shift photos in PS but crazy how model like the can look :)
-
bascially it allows you to tilt or shift the lens or both.
This allows for perspective correction via the lens, e.g. you look up at a tall building, with a normal lens the point of convergence / vanishing point is apparent, with a tilt shift it corrects this "distortion"
The tilt really affects the DoF, this is what's happening in the vid, where the focal plane has been shifted, DoF is greatly pronounced, this tricks the brain into thinking the subject is smaller, because the DoF is so extreme.
have a read through

specific tilt shift lens are very expensive as they are specialized, the cheap option for this lensbaby http://www.lensbaby.com/index.php
or PS for miniature faking

Week off in summer could yield a lot of cool stuff with this

at that price I'd be tempted too, if I didn't use Nikon
you seen the real price on that lens?

Yes, I have - hence I'd hire it for a week.
And I might well do in the next few weeks, at that price as I use Canon.

Heh - this saves a load of hassle:

Think I still might try the real thing.

hey guys, this effect is possible on video by using after effects, it's pretty easy to do it as well just depends on your base video, if the cam isnt moving etc then it's very easy. Check this out
http://www.cleverbits.com/tiltshift.php
That pretty much covers how to do a whole video in it.

Quite a few of the digital camcorders and DSLR cameras have this as a built in option too.

That is awesome work. Brilliant use of focus and depth of field, apart for a small section at around 1min20s of very standard bmx footage.
The stuff shot around in the wood, particularly when they're digging tracks and jumps, is superb.

yer i thought the bit where robbo was jumping over the fence and into the other thingy was a bit of a ruiner for the vid. But the rest was just awsome, and yes... the bit where they get in the woods and shovel the water looks so so ridiculous
