Title: Anti roll bar?
Post by: smitty12 on 27 May 2010, 18:21
Right i'm no further forward with this knocking on the car? Could it be the anti roll bars? They dont look in the best condition and my car is lowered by 50mm on weitec springs and standard shocks

what uprated anti roll bars can you get and how costly are they?

Hi Smitty, i had to change this too, i've got an Eibach for 80.- swiss francs, 2nd hand. The problem on the mk IV it's the right semiaxis. It's a bit bigger than the left one and also shorter, so it works more on bumps and so on. So when u lower the car like you did (i have the same coilover as you), the OEM antiroll bar is touching on this! The Eibach it's bent in a different way and it wont touch against the semiaxis. Hope this helped you!

Yup had it off the other day and its fine,
think a ARB could cause the knocking?

Hi again Smitty,
on my car was not only knocking, but also grinding when braking down hard  If you got the coilover and lowered the car more than 40mm, then the oem ARB will touch on the semiaxis..check the right semiaxis for signs or so..by doing this, you can be 100% sure if it's the right problem!

The one at the right side, when u lower the car more than 40mm it goes touching the ARB on the mk IV

What about the other 2 engine mounts?

Also with tharbs its the bushes wear and also the arb corrodes where the bush is.

A simple test,is put a bit of paint on the drive shaft and go for a spin,if it rubs on the arb you'll see it clear as day.

good idea, will try that tonight then
Thing is the car has been lowered by 50mm for about 11month so dont see why it would just start to rub now? will give it a try thou

What are the uprated bushes you can buy? and where could i find them?

Sorry, i missed the point  :embarassed: this problem is only on the 150hp (1.8T or V5), 170hp  or the TDI and the V6 4 motion..my friend said me that. As my experience..i had this problem on my old GTI V5 and this one 1.8T..but yours is a 125hp? 2.0l N/A right?

easiest way to picture it ?

When you are driving along the drive shaft rod will be spinining, the arb is connected to the drop links to hold it in place and keep the front end stiff. Depending on your arb if they loop over the drive shaft rod when you go over bumps, brake hard the car and suspension will pitch.

The drive shaft will move in a up and down manner, when going over a bump the drive shaft rod will move up thus getting closer to your arb, so to get round this you want to get arbs that go underneath the drive shaft rod e.g. whiteline

Once you replace the arb with after market ones you can raise your car lower or higher as much as you want, normally if the drive shaft rod is rubbing against the arb you will see a ring like the dirts warn away to fresh metal on your drive shaft rod directly opposite (under) the arb, tell tell signs, the knock normally happens when cornering hard, going over speed bumps, do as the guy suggested (paint) or easier full lock your steering wheel and look.

Its easy the drive shaft rod on one side of your car will be thicker and shorter then the other, its connected directly to your wheels, look at the thick side and you will see the arb going over the drive shaft rod in a loop sort off, have a good look.

I have the same problem with my standard 1.4 golf but i was told by a mechanic who drove it, that its probably the drop link i think he said anyway so hopefully get it on the ramp soon.
