Hi all..new to the board, glad to have found it as looks like a great source of info. Just picked up a 2010 Golf GTD DSG, fully optioned up,very impressed with it indeed...not new I am the second owner, hence I did not spec it.
What I am not very impressed with however is the RNS510. THe sound quality is pretty good, its the dynaudio version.
What is not good is that firstly I seem to have lost a centre armrest MDI Ipod connection as I have a 6cd in there, would much rather have had the ipod..seems daft to not have that as well as a cd changer...is it possible there may e a connector in the glovebox?...I have looked and cannot see anthing, so unless its hidden not looking likely.
Not to worry copied a load of .wma files onto a 16gb HC SD card...nope that wont play either...even though in the handbook it indicates .wma files are ok, it seems from the posts here that the car dhas to be under 2gb & the files as mp3...which again is a right pain as I have a Bang & olufsen at home that plays .wma files...I then convert them into apple itunes to play on ipods, so last thing I want to do is have to convert them a third time to get them to play on the VW stereo...
Obviously well aware of the iphone issue as my phone wont connect....so overall not a happy chap with the VW system , pretty buggy & really surprised at how poor it is in the year 2010 on such a premium product.
Also would be nice to be able to change the colour scheme on the display from the awful red to something a little more subtle, again something that one doesnt seem to be able to do
Coming from a BMW with excellant phone & ipod connection this thing is extremely frustrating to say the least!

Glad you found it Chris
The unit can play wma files and you can use cards bigger than 2Gb exactly like the manual says. Don't suppose you know someone else with the RNS510 that you can check your card on their system?
The colour of the unit can be changed using VAG.COM software and a lead.
There are 3 different colour schemes you can have

The lead is not cheap to purchase but there are a good few souls out there willing to do it for you for some beer money
Like I said in my previous post, the Fiscon integrates the ipod without any issues.

Thanks for the info, very useful. Not sure what you mean by:-

previous post?...Fiscon?...sorry if I am being thick here!
So just to clarify then the unit should work with an HC SD card of 16gb loaded with .wma files?....I dont understand it as I fully formatted the card to FAT32 last night, and then loaded up a few albums. THe unit just seems to be flicking through the songs one after another, like its looking at them all, doesnt play, if I then select a track with the drop down box & press play, it says 'files in wrong format' or words to that effect. Strangely it does show the track names as it flicks through them in a continous loop.
It doesnt just go through them all for a while at first or something does it?
Again thanks for you help, will look at how much a vag lead costs etc

On the golfmk6.com thread I replied regarding the Fiscon unit.
I've not used wma files for a while but know I had no problem with the few that I did use. If I get a chance this afternoon I'll put some on an SD card and give it a go.
-
Oh right, sorry was a bit thick re the fishcon....will check it out
thanks

I put a dozen or so .wma files on my SD card and it would only play 1 of them. It listed them all but when I tried to play the others it said they were encrypted and couldn't be played or words to that effect.
That's what I bloody get for actually paying to download them via iTunes.
What a joke, I can't even get to play my own paid for music!!!!! No wonder torrent sites are so popular.
**Lesson learned.
So to answer your question, are your wma files encrypted?
-
Good question..I dont think so, cd's were ripped using Bang & Olufsen's beoplayer software, they are stored on my PC in a music folder on the desktop, all as wma files...It doesnt actually give me a message saying encrypted in anyway...it says 'files in wrong format'.
When I get time I am going to convert a few to .mp3's and try again...
Thanks for having a go though
-
It only gave a message when I tried to play the first file then just skipped through the rest, pausing at each one. It wasn't until I hit selection and tried each song individually that the message came up.
I wonder if your B&O software rips to a different .wma format?
-
I wouldnt have thought so ....basically the beoplayer software is linked to a 500gb beomaster hard drive on the music system, when I rip a CD it rips is lossless ( .wma ) and sends one copy to the beomaster & saves a copy on the hard drive of my pc. The ones saved on the PC have always been accesible to me to rip to cds and indeed I scanned from itunes and also converted them all into an itunes library..so it seems nothing else has a problem, and I see no reason why B&O would encrypt as its not like itunes, not buying anything, just using it as a vehicle to get music onto a hard drive..so as I say I cannot see it being encrypted.
To be honest I get really stalled with all this stuff, fed up of all the issues moving music about, nothing ever seems to work smoothly, Itunes files are a pain to work with, fed up of converting & mucking about...I would much rather just get rid of my 6cd stacker & have an ipod connected instead
Suppose my real dissapointment is in the golf system, really thought on a 2010 car the media centre would work easily & effectively without a load of fannying around...especially for the money the option costs..its miles behind the BMW idrive & audi MMI
Also cannot be bothered ripping the cds to the hard drive on the car as it takes ages & you have to name them all
....it seems the vw system has all the functions but none work or are very practical
-
Never having had another car that had ipod connectivity in it from the factory, I don't know any different so I can only imagine this is a real pain.
Not sure what you mean by ripping CD's in the car that have to be renamed? Do you mean copying over to the hard drive in the car as you can't rip audio files onto the hard drive?
What I do is copy any music I want onto my SD card then copy them over to the hard drive. I either do this while out driving (it doesn't seem to effect the heads functions at all apart from a little unresponsive) or do it while the car is sitting in the drive switched off (mine seems to keep copying even although the unit is off)
Not sure about the naming, any name I have given the source material automatically transfers over to the copied material on the Hard drive.
-
Ok im with you on the copying to hard drive. I had a ferrari for a while and that had a Bose system that you could load an audio cd into & copy it to a hard drive...problem then was you had to use the control knob to select letters to name the album otherwise you never knew which was which
I only work 3 miles from where I live and the golf car is just for that type of small journey, so thought copying would be a pain as Im not in the car long enough, but if it does it with the engine off then that would be great.
Think I will convert my files to mp3, bang them on a 2gb card & copy them across to the hard drive, and move the files that way then.
Thanks for your help & advice once again... I will get there!

Came across a site that states the MDI can't read lossless wma files, which could be the reason for your problem!

I have tried copying straight from itunes AAC files to DVD and SD card and they wouldn't play - didn't even recognise the DVD disc. This unit is using really backwards technology! Even an ancient 6 year old mobile phone that I have takes AAC files!!!!! I am also really annoyed that the 6CD changer replaces, not adds to an ipod connector, wasn't pointed out to me when I spec'd the car. So now to trying to convert all my itunes downloads to MP3 - just so I can play them in this outdated, overexpensive, 'media' player. Not impressed! So I have this unit, which lets face it isn't exactly cheap, and I can't seem to play anything but CDs :( I am becoming more and more disappointed in VW. This will be my second and last golf I think. Already looking to change I have have only had the GTD a couple of months - just too many problems with it.
-
What problems are you having with the GTD? thanks Steve
-
Strange.....My AAC files straight from itunes play no problems.

What media device are you using, SD card, DVD? My son has spent most of the day converting my albums to MP3's and putting them on an Samsung SD card formatted to FAT16. When put in the RNS510 displays the tracks/albums and when you press to play it comes up 'data not recognised' after 10 seconds it then starts to play. Have I got a faulty unit - does anyone else have these problems?
Thanks
Ann

It was the ipod. I converted a few songs to AAC to see if that helped with the stuttering when tracks changed but unfortunately it never helped.
-
Well I got my music files onto the HDD at weekend. Downloaded an Mp3 ripper, and ripped all my .wma files, loaded them onto the 16gb SD card and loaded them into the car...Its a shame though it wont play .wma, because it would have saved me a lot of messing about and also I dont care what anyone says, wma lossless is far superior sound to me
But anyway at least I have now suceeded in getting music onto the most annoying media system I have ever come across
Unlike the previosu poster I willnot be changing my car becasue of it though, I think the GTD with DSG is a great car...media aside

If it were only the media player that is the problem. Have rattles coming from every direction, steering rack grinding when parking etc same as previous car, vibration, and a strange noise coming from front left wheel. This together with the fact that after 2 months of ownership the wheel axels are becoming quite corroded and it adds up to the fact that my next car won't be a VW.
Had to cancel my appointment at the VW garage last week, but it goes in on Friday. They said they will probably have to keep it some time, so don't know what they suspect. I must say though that my local dealership is quite good and makes no fuss about rectifying problems.
