Title: A week on - My new Golf GTI MK6 - thoughts and impressions
Post by: jonnygo on 26 May 2010, 21:05
Hi all

I took receipt of my first Golf GTI last Thursday and would like to share my impressions with you. (and a few questions you may be able to help me with???)

1. Impressed with the sporty look and enjoying 18inch Monza shadows
2. Disappointed my Blackberry is not compatible (can't understand why a modern phone will not pair)
3. Impressed with black leather interior.  Feels comfortable and has a reassuring smell
4. Have no idea how to clean it.  A chalky residue has appeared on the passenger seat.  no idea what it is.
5. Getting to enjoy DSG gearbox.  A lot of interactive fun
6. Hating MPG (previously had a GT TDI)
7. Loving the connectivity of ipod
8. Unsure why it keeps running out of power (does the car not act as a battery?)
9. Liking the handling and feel but not pushing the engine too much yet.  Has done 5000 miles.
10. Wishing I had a sun roof although the aircon is a breeze! (pun intended)
11. Not sure how much I will use sophisticated satnav system
12. Why is there a motor running under the satnav when I park the car?  is this normal?

In no particular order

Loads of folk have complained about connectivity problems with the VW Bluetooth kit hence why folk have went the 3rd party route.
Any leather conditioner like this  (http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/interior/gliptone-liquid-leather-conditioner/prod_210.html) should help keep the leather in first class condition.
The ipod should be charging while it is connected. Do you mean when you leave it connected overnight?
The motor running will be the fan to cool the system down. The SatNav has a hard drive in it which needs cooling.
At 5000 miles its certainly done enough to push it. Get the foot down

Thanks for tips.
I was offered an in car kit by VW at cost price (£200) but I think I've paid enough for this car already !!

When I pressed "media" button I was getting no response from ipod today and found that it had run out of juice even though I left it in the car
Currently recharging at home

have tried taking car to warp speed!!  A 330i tried to race me tonight but I must now be drawn in!!!

If I leave my ipod in the car plugged in it has occasionally drained itself but that usually takes a few days of not using it.
If it won't fire back up when you start the car it might just be because it doesn't have enough power, even although it is currently charging. If you start off with a fully charged ipod you'll probably find you won't have any problems.

I leave an iPod (nano 3) permanently in the car.  It's one that had a screen fail after a trip through the washing machine, so the car has rescued it from a future as a memory stick.

It's been there since September and has stayed charged permanently.

You are using the proper connector under the arm-rest, aren't you?

Rolfe.

The ipod will only work with the one connector.
I reckon if your ipod is low on power it will drain eventually leading to what the OP has. Howver if you start off with a reasonably charged one or at least one that's not teetering on the edge of no power, then you won't ever see problems. Or at least that's what happened with mine when I first got the car.

There does seem to be loads of reports out there in the wild of others ipods draining will plugged in.

I have an old 5G 30gb iPod that lives in the car.  If I don't use it for a couple of days it forgets which song was last playing and starts at the songs beginning with A!
Sometimes the Media section is blank (not anymore as I have music on the HD!) and the iPod is dead.  I just leave it for a couple of minutes and it comes back on.
The battery seems to drain - and like most Apple products - it needs a bit of a charge before you can turn it back on.

I am installing a vinyl turntable in my car. The ACC in 'comfort' is meant for this. Could be a hoot!

What BB are you using? I am currently using a Bold 9700. Took me quite a few attempts to get it paired to start off with but after removing the battery and re-booting the phone it worked fine. Hope you get it sorted cause the bluetooth kit is really good. Well, I'm impressed anyway.

Hi

The Blackberry I am using is a 8120!? Does this mean anything to you?

When I search using the car stystem it does come up as "Blackberry" but when I try and activate the car says "mobile not compatible."

The VW garage said that Blackberry and iphone were uncompatible!  but you managed ok?
