Title: which head unit?
Post by: tom-gardiner on 26 May 2010, 17:25
i have a mk4 golf i allready have a sub from my old car to go in and i want to put in 4 door speakers, 2 6X9's and the sub. the sub has its own amp and the 6X9's will also be run off their own amp, the 4 door speakers will run off the head unit. how many outputs will i need off the headunit? 3?

thanks

firstly don't bother with the 6x9's they will make the sub sound pants as the cross frequencies will cancel out some of the sub bass
so because of that you only need a stereo with 1 pre out
however if you still decide to get the 6x9's then ideally you need a h/u with 3 pre outs
so this will give you front rca outputs for the possibility of upgrading to an amp for them
a rear pre out for the 6x9's
and a dedicated subwoofer pre out

I agree with troublestarter - ditch the idea of (amplified or otherwise) 6x9's.

I would consider using the amplifier you were going to use to power them and use it to power a decent set of components up front, powering your rear door speakers from the headunit.

For that set up you need a headunit with a set of front RCA outputs and a non-fading (Sub) out.
