I have a 1990 Mk2 Golf 1.3 which has been having some problems recently.? It starts fine cold, however after 2-3 miles it starts juddering and when I put my foot down it feels like it's starved of fuel.? When I come to a halt at traffic lights the engine will cut out, but will start again no problems at the turn of a key, but won't stay going unless I have my foot on the accelerator.? After this I can drive the car but I have to overrev it somewhat, and it's very jerky.?
If I stop and leave the car for a few minutes then start up again I can usually drive perfectly for another mile or so before the problem reoccurs.? It's not so bad on my way to college since I'm almost there by the time it starts but I'd like to sort it!? My mate reckons it's carb icing, but I'm not sure.? If anyone could shed any light on what the problem is, and/or how to fix it I'd be very grateful!

The same thing happened with my 1.3, always seemed to happen when your at a busy junction with a massive queue behind you!!!! :undecided: :undecided: :huh:
I think it is carb icing, you need to check the heat feed pipe from the exhaust manifold, the one that goes to the airbox, for corrosion, blah, blah blah, you know the normal wear and tear!!

def sounds like carb icing. next time it happens look at your exhaust is there loads of black smoke? thats what my old driver did!

My old GL used to ice up every winter. What I used to do was to disconect the carb air pipe that sucked cold air from the front of the car , and blocked it up with tin foil held on with a rubber band, then it was fine all winter. Bit of a bodge but it allways worked.

I'll go check all the connections to the carb, the large one that goes from the front to the carb is looking a bit scruffy, is that the one that I should check?

Yep definately sounds like carb icing to me. As already mentioned, check the hot air intake that comes off the exhaust manifold - very common for the shroud to corrode and/or the pipe to deteriorate. Also check the operation of the intake flap to make sure it is moving so that the air is drawn from the exhaust manifold and not the normal cold air intake.

My dad had a similar problem, turned out the fuel pump was knackered!
