Hi, I bought my GTi a few weeks ago. So far all I have done is upgrade the interior lights all to LED along with the number plate. Very simple if you're wondering. Just gotta wait for it to get dark to see how they look! Never been a member of anything like this but i seem to keep reading stuff on here so thought I might as well join.
I'm interested in the OEM LED rear lights advertised on
http://cgi.ebay.de/Orig-VW-Golf-V-LED-Heckleuchten-Ruckleuchten-kirschrot-/380227807619?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Autoteile_Zubeh%C3%B6r&hash=item588757e983
Has anybody bought these or got them for sale in the UK? Are the lenses easy to swap for the reverse and fog lights? Are any different leads needed and does anything else need to be done to make them work?
I am also considering these:

Again, anyone got these?

Did you get some interior LEDs that don't bring up a fault code? If so, where did you get them from?
-
Loads of people have gone for these. Personally not a fan but as RR says, ETTO.
Incidentally, RR has a set on his car too.
-
I got 8 of these at £14.99 a pair.
http://www.hids4u.co.uk/501-led-canbus-super-bright-white-2w-upgrade-bulb.html
And I used 4 of these at £14.97 per pair

So far no errors and they look great. If I can work out how I'll post a few photos.
...No luck with the photo's yet, not sure what i'm doing

Ordered a set today. How hard can it be to change a few lenses??

Thanks, bleeding pricey bits of kit, aren't they! What did you need the 4 x festoon lights for? 2 x for the rear plate & .....
-
Yeah they're not cheap but I bought cheap ones before and they didn't work. 2 festoon for the number plate, one for the central dome light in the front, and one for the boot. You could use another 2 for the vanity mirrors if you really wanted, I don't use them anyway. The boot one doesn't fit as the holder is too big, but a folded up piece of kitchen foil does the trick :) I do have 2 spare led 501's if you're interested: bought them for the sidelights but apparently that would be illegal...

Be good to see them.
This will sort you out - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=85911.0

That looks great! Are they easy to swap?

Easy swap - took me less than an hour on my own and that included taking all the hatch trim off

Is there a how to for this? I saw one before I ordered them but can't find it now grrr?

Dremel out ready to go and made sure to cover the worktop from all that plastic dust.

A view of the rear of the light and how it has melted plastic studs keeping the inners together.

After taking the tops off the plastic studs with the Dremel.
The two inner lights disassembled and ready for the next stage...cleaning up all the plastic dust is a good thing to get out of the way here as it gets everywhere and you don't want any in the inside of the light housings.
The reverse and fog light casings are dremelled to remove the outer sections. This is done because the plastic studs will not poke through to the bulb housing after dremelling and they need to stand proud when re-assembled to give the glue purchase.
The parts all ready to swap over and re-assemble.
First bit going back in.
I used a hot glue gun to stick everything together. Another member gave me a warning about using superglue as over time it "fogs" the lenses to give a milky appearance. The glue gun should ensure everything stays where it should be without any "milking"
Clear outer lens in place.
Red inner lens in place on the SAME light cluster.
This last picture is key. It is very awkward to fit the plastic studs back in place as they are loose inside the light housing and a tight fit in the bulb housing holes. To get around this I dremelled out the Bulb housing holes with a small reaming fitting. I then turned the light housing upside down, so that the plastic studs dropped down from the light housing and popped the bulb housing back into place with the studs sitting proud of the bulb housing. I then hot glued the studs to the bulb housing and left them to set.

Managed to switch lenses fine and fit the passenger side unit. Drivers side will not plug into the connector, but the old one fits fine. Any ideas??
-
Check the inside of the connectors as one of the pins may have bent over.
May sound like the obvious question, but did you make sure you put the wiring connectors back in their ORIGINAL positions and didn't accidentally swap them over?

Its the outer unit so no swapping. One of the pins did look a bit out of line but the connector wouldn't go anywhere near far enough in to reach the pins.
-
Have you looked at the moulding to see if there is a fault with the connector unit itself? They sometimes have raw plastic from the mould stuck on them, which prevents connection.

Thanks for your help it's sorted now. Managed to clip it in by removing the back of the light unit and pushing the connectors together from both sides. Still don't know what was wrong but it's finished now :)

The other day I was annoyed to find the lens in the reverse light had come loose and rattled when closing the boot. Today I took the light apart and fixed it back in place with a glue gun, running out before sticking the final outer piece back on. So I used a bit of superglue instead...which appears to have resulted in the inner of the outer plastic lens going a bit cloudy. I know an earlier post by Hurdy mentions this but I hardly used any and the lens seems to have gone cloudy within 30 minutes. So annoyed at this. Is there a way of removing whatever this might be? I don't think it's actually glue, can't see how it could've got to where it is?
-
It's glue fumes that have done that, you can buy super glue remover, that might work, or some thinners?

I've tried using water, washing up liquid and White spirit but they've made no difference. What exactly would you recommend? The damage looks like small scratches. There was a strong smell of fumes so that makes sense. I just hope it's not permanent, although it's not too bad
-
Search internet for Super glue remover, you can buy it in the same way you buy super glue. B&Q or somewhere might sell it.
-
I've ordered some now. Hope it works. I really don't get how the fumes can make the plastic look all scratched!
