Title: Two questions, 1. Aircon and 2. DSG paddles
Post by: Davstylee on 25 May 2010, 11:03
Hi guys

2 things to ask.

1. Now the heat is upon us I have started using the air con more. Since using it I have noticed a really bad musty stagnant type smell coming from it. It lasts for a good few minutes then when the air con is up to temp and nice and chill the smell goes away.

Any ideas on what might be causing it, and any fixes?

2. I have the DSG gear box and the grey rubbery stuff that covers the paddles on the steering wheel has started to peel away.

Does anyone know if you can get protective covers for the paddles, or any other bright ideas to stop it peeling any more?

Dont know about the paddles,

but the air con will just need an anti bacterial treatment. they get a bit smelly when not used for a while. its proper easy to do, you can get them from halfords ect.... just follow the instructions

Pluss they smell nice when its done.. bonous

Thanks, I thought it would be something easy like that. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something more severe. I will be off to my local Halfords to pick up a can of that stuff tonight.

So anyone else got any ideas on the paddle problem?

The air con could be the cabin air filter element needing changed.

My wife's Saab had this problem: the filter was slightly damp and starting to mould.  Replacement was about a tenner from Halfords and a 5minute job start to finish to change.

No idea how to change it on the Golf but don't imagine it'll be too difficult.

I have tried the spray can stuff to try and get rid of the smell but no luck.

So does anyone know where I can get the filter and how easy it is to replace?

The filter is in the passenger footwell (having moved from a panel under the nearside of the windscreen in the Mk4). Should be no more than 15mins to replace and it's not a bloody knuckle job.

The filters are readily available as they are a regular service item - so either a main dealer, e-bay (£11) or these guys : www.puravent.co.uk

Ive hear there are companies that rerubber handles and stuff but never seen one or the end job. The only other alternative is new paddles....I hate all this rubber...didn't happen with the old plastic did it? Makes the cars old before their time when the peel happens

Sorry to be a numpty but I have no idea what filter I am meant to be looking for. Can you or someone else shed some light on what one I need to get, or give me a direct link to a website that sells them?

Cool I will give them a ring to see if they have one I can pick up tonight.

Does anyone have a quick guide on how to replace it?

Dave - see my post above, this link : www.puravent.co.uk gives you an idea as to what you're in need of and a rough guide to fitment (click on the car pollen filter tab obviously !).

Awesome thanks everyone for your help. Fingers crossed this gets rid of the smell.

Just need to know if anyone can help with the peeling paddles. I think you can get extenders that stick on over the originals but I’m not sure where you get them from. Ive tried Google but no luck????

as a cheap fix you can try an air con cleaner.  I've actually got one in my boot but I've not got round to using it yet.  Basically you stick aircon on full whack, leave aerosol in car pointed at vents and it discharges through system and in theory kills all the bacteria and smells etc.  Im yet to use and cant remember the exact type but its something along the lines of ...

Tesco and Aldi were selling them a while back for about £4

I have already used the exact same stuff on that link and it didn't make much of a difference. Was ok for a while but the smell came back. I don't know if this means anything, but the smell is worse if I turn the air con off and just have the blowers on LO????

You might have a dead rat in there lol

Right I got the pollen filter out last night and it didn’t smell bad and wasn't wet or anything? I have ordered the upgrade one from puravent.co.uk but I doubt that is going to help with the smell.

I also took out the passenger and driver side air vents and had a look and smell inside the holes. I could smell something but I couldn’t see anything that could be causing the problem???? And I certainly didn’t see any dead rats ha ha!

I’m really stumped and it is driving me mad. It is really bad when you have the blowers on the Lo temp, but the air con off. When you turn the air con on it kinda goes away. This is all well and good during summer, but come winter I will freeze coz I don’t think my heated seats alone will be of much use. Also the extra fuel consumption is gonna suck.

Be really good if anyone has any other advice, or should I take it to the dealers? The car is still under warranty so if anything needs changing or whatever it should be free.

Im having the same problem with my Air-Con. It stinks for about 3-4 mins as soon as i switch the engine on, (the recent blast of hot weather is forcing me to leave the air-con on LO!) but when the car warms up the smell goes and it works well.

Davstylee -
Was there any success in the new pollen filter?

If so i'll get one on order straight away, the smell makes me feel sick when i get in!

Hi mate, no the pollen filter did not work and nether did the can of that bacteria killing spray that you leave in the car for 10 minutes whilst the air con circulates. I have taken it to the dealers and they sprayed a can of the stuff around the car too but still no luck. It is fine when the air con is on and cold, but as soon as you turn it off the smell comes back.

I asked the guy at the dealers what it could be, and he said there is a small over flow tank inside the dash that is something to do with the air con. He said this can go mouldy and can cause the smell. So I asked is there a way of cleaning this and he said, the only way is to clean it is spray that bacteria killing spray, because to get to it you need to remove the whole dash. Can someone tell me if this is true?

That sounds like a nightmare! I wonder if it might have something to do with it needing a re-gas? The guy who did it on my previous Alfa 156 told me it should be done every 2-3 years. The air-con is really cold but i cant deal with the smell! It smells like ammonia or something!
Title: Re: Two questions, 1. Aircon and 2. DSG paddles
Post by: Davstylee on 22 June 2010, 14:40
Well the dealer said it may need a re-gas but i refuse to pay £85 at the dealers for it, so if it does need one I will go to this garage where I know the guys and they will do a whole system clean and re-gas for cheaper than the dealers.

The weird thing is the smell is worse when the air con is off and when the temp is set ti high so that makes me think it has nothing to do with the air con?

Yeah that is weird, i've only had my car a week so i can't offer my advice on that one, and it has been pretty hot since i got the car so i've only had it on LO.

I would suggest taking to a mate who will clean the whole system and re-charge the gas, hopefully this will sort it for you. Think i'll try a re-gas and a filter change and see how i get on

I have DSG paddle extensions in Carbon Fibre. I bought them from the TT Shop (also known as TT roadsport). They are made by TID styling.
