hi
i'm the proud new owner of a 1991 gti 16v and was wondering if its the norm for the fuel pump to make a pretty loud buzzing. it seems louder on startup but doesn't go away.
last owner said this was norm and that it had always been like this with no probs
any info would be much appreciated
thanks

fit a new main fuel filter (?5) and try replacing the lift pump in the tank. ?20+vat from German Swedish French and is easy to replace
if the lift pump is on its way out it, then the main fuel pump has to work more, and therefore sounds louder.

i think the preignition noise is the fuel pump being primed or something. it stops after 2-3 seconds and is normal.
if you can still hear the fuel pump then its probably on its way out. as far as i can tell, more and more people are changing the lift pump as they seem to be dying on older cars. i certainly changed mine recently.

yeah the noise when you turn the key is the system being pressurised. i would agree with tin and gambit!
-
thanks for your help, at that price i'll def look into changing the fuel pump and filters.
i presume that it'll be covered in my Haynes manual
cheers
Jimbo

Mine makes a buzzing noise all the time ,and you are saying this should be quiet all the time?
-
generally - you shouldnt hear your fuel pump. put it this way, other than pre-ignition i've never heard it on any of my cars.
when i get back to the UK next week i'll start my valver up and have a listen for it.
-
i can only hear mine when i start the car but only then for about 3 seconds
