Hi,

Im new to this site, I know this is probably a common question. I have done lots of searches over the past few weeks and need some help on my specific car, so please don't delete my post or tell me to search...

I have a 1994 Golf 1.8 driver with 180000 on the clock, I love it to bits. It sustained some major sump damage so I bought a 2E golf gti and put it in the car, changing the loom and ecu over too.

While the engine was out of the car I changed the cam belt, after fitting I couldn't get the car to start, eventually after re-timming the car several times I got it going..... but it runs really hot

I have taken the car to the local VW AUDI Specialists, they said that it may have needed a larger GTI radiator, which I fitted. This didn't help, so they recomended changing the head gasket as the water system was pressurising up and spilling from the expansion tank. So I got the head skimmed and fitted new gaskets, then took the car in to get timmed up properly.

It doesn't spill over any more but it is getting very hot still. I changed the thermostat and water pump today but still having no luck. So I removed the thermostat to see if it helps. It didn't

All the pipes are getting hot as are the heaters in the car. I didn't think the fan was kicking in soon enough so I wired in a fan override switch so I run it on constantly.

When driving on the open road the temp may drop to 90, but its normally around 100 possibly rising slightly higher in traffic.

I am wondering if the gague is at fault as if I leave the car overnight and go out in the morning as soon as I turn the key it rises to 90 within a second, not right surely?

Apart from the car getting hot it runs great. Could it just be an electrical fault?

I really need to get this sorted as I need to make a 200 mile trip to run to the sun on thursday evening. PLEASE HELP ME

how did you set the timing? its not liek on old cars where you line it up at idle with a timing light, has to be done in conjunction with vag-com I believe. it might work if you set it up using my mk2 digifant tuning guide, ignore the idle & co bits as not relavant. just try the timing part
