Has anyone done this and what's the best way?
can you get the plastic piece as one without the cut out for the lock?
Cheers
-
you mean the boot plynth thing?
yaeh you can buy these but not sure where from. would be cheaper so fill/sand one yourself?
-
eurotek do them i think? they are made by cult society i think and still have the lock but you stick the key in at a funny angle from underneath if that makes sense?!?! but they are too expensive in my opinion.. about ?70 or something daft! get the filler out!!

Is there not VW that i could get it from? on without a lock in place like a polo or MK3 or whatever (only guessing at these cars as i don'r know)
Cheers

probably not without some modifications so you may as well put your boot on a solenoid and just filler over your one or plastic weld it? this is all part of the wondefull world of car modifying!!! if it was easy and you could buy parts that easily, every other golf would have one! you could do the lot in a weekend with alot of tea drinking, get to it son!

it doesnt look like it sticks out as much as the original one
ooh im tempted

Yeah it does look nice, but a bit too pricey :) + you got to colour code it :)
So masking tape and blue tac here i go :)
I have not done any filling before, so whats the stuff i need? Mesh and filler and lots of sanding then primer paint and lacquer?
What plastic welding?
-
plastic welding is when you weld plastic!
seriously though this can be done but i'm not sure what plastics it works on, but motorbike repairs use it to fix fairing as its bloody expensive so if you put a crack in yours you can weld it up rather than buy a new panel.
i've only ever filled little things so i don't know what would be the best way to do this, but i assume if you use a small bit of fibreglass to patch the gap then skim over with filler,
sand back, fill, sand back etc til its nice and smooth
then plastic prime a few coats rubbing down to get it smooth. when you rub down the last few times use a very fine grade wet and dry with lots of soapy water to keep the paper clean.
then when your happy with the finish get the paint out! do it somewhere warm or the paint will go sh!tty, the primer can be helped along with a hot air gun.
take your time and you should be fine. the reason i say use fibreglass is because you want someting fairly strong as when you shut your boot, the force may crack filler alone so it would be a good idea to use something strong.
can anyone else offer any better suggestions of how to do this? bodywork is not a speciality of mine......

The easiest way is to get a second one from a scrap yard.
Cut the lock section out of your original one and using the spare cut a similar sized section out of that and then use this as a fill in piece.
you can plastic weld it into place and then fill the gaps with either more plastic or a little bit of filler.
Plastic welding is one of the many smart repairs that have taken off, the other notable one being PDR ,paintless dent removal.
