Offending pipe has small split..............

Causing this connector to be covered in junk.......only on the outside it seems.

Well I can't make out where those red lines are pointing too apart from the one with the arrow on it.

What engine is that?  :wink:

The red lines just border the pipe. 

Its a 99 1.8 20v  gti non turbo.

looks liek a breather pipe to me, all the oily crap everywhere confirms it. take a visit top your local vw dealer and get them to sell you a new pipe.
