.....who will henceforth be known as The Moo....and he's lovely!
I'm a very happy woman now I'm back in a Golf.
The mystery non starting problem turned out to be that old favourite, the ignition amp. Owner had it replaced at the garage so I'm happy with that.
Had a good test drive before parting with my hard earned cash and no, it doesn't handle like my old MkI but it acquitted itself very nicely round bends and there was plenty of oomph up through the gears. Let's just say the owner had a firm grip on his door handle when I got on the motorway to check!
New CD/MP3 player fitted this afternoon, just waiting for OH to come home and admire him now! Will post pics once I've hit the Autoglym at the weekend.

Nice one good to see another mk3 8v owner here...
-
Wait til the 16 valvers keep passing ya!
-
Hey - good choice - I like my 8v
He's called "Ernest" by the way.
My other half has a Polo called "Penfold".
Sad eh?
Happy motoring..............

Welcome to the mk3 owners section
At last we are getting some members who own mk3's.
Look forwards to seeing your pictures when you post them.

well done hattie!! hope u have happy motoring days infront of u !!!

I'm on (or should that be in?) my 4th Mk3 8v at the minute and its a great everyday car, nice one. Read the sig, the constant banging on about 16v this and that get a bit tedious after a while.
Its a Golf after all, I bought mine because I like Golfs. If I'd wanted something faster etc I would of got a 306 GTi6. Before anybody kicks off, I've had one of them too and they are mega and leave lots of other GTis for dead on straights and bends.
-
Good to see you got a car your happy with!!!
-
.....and I haven't seen the bloody thing all weekend because the OH keeps making off in it at high speed!
-
.? If I'd wanted something faster etc I would of got a 306 GTi6.? Before anybody kicks off, I've had one of them too and they are mega and leave lots of other GTis for dead on straights and bends.
thats because you drive a mk3.........................

I needed a car that I could feel comfortable in, the 306 was a bit tight for me as driver. Thats the reason.

Well done and well said...mines the same as yrs but tornado red.

I only joke when i am on about 8valvers and 16valvers after all its a gti, not matter how many valves or cylinders it has got, its a dub and its a gti.
Paul
btw mine has 16valves, 4 cylinders and is dragon green lol
-
i can honestly say i absolutely love my mk3 gti 8v 2.0 everything about the car just says "go on get in have a drive" and it (she) shines like nobodies business i'd recomend the car to anyone
i've had 4 mk2's 3 normal everyday bod cars and a oak green 16valver (which flew by the way) and i kept seeing mk3 gti's and fell in love so i got one it took me a while to find a good one but i got one
mine is a phaze 2 mk3 8v gti with long beach alloys in a strange dark blue that changes colour to purple at certain times of the day and it's mint with only 92 k on the clock with the fullest of vw service history
i couldnt have found a better car, i put it in for its mot just before christmas and it sailed with compliments from the garage owner who wanted to by it to which i turned him down even though he offered me more than i bought it for
so it goes to show there are good ones out there you just have to look

I'll probably get slated for saying this but I'm thinking about selling the Golf for a 306 GTI6, why did you sell it, just because you wanted another Golf? What do you reckon about them?

It doesn't feel as big inside as the Golf, but the one I bought had a few problems according to the previous owner who contacted me after I bought it.? Thats it really.? I thought it was a very good looking car, VERY fast, VERY good round bends but the build quality isn't as good as the Golf.? It always felt a bit lightly built buit they are heavier than a Golf.? I would be tempted again, you can get the Rallye as well, a bit lighter with no Aircon / half leather or electric windows.? You save about 100Kg in weight and with 167 brake on tap you can definately notice it.? Oh yes, head gaskets can go on all the 306's at about 50K, mine was gone on my 306 XSi and that was a few hundred short of the 50K.
306's don't like going fast through very twisty S bends though apparently (according to Skip Brown Motors - THE guru on all things pug), the rear suspension can't react fast enough and a few have gone backwards into the scenery.? He sells an upgrade to take out the passive rear wheel steering as its this that upsets the car on these S bends.? Whether any of us are good enough to reach the point where this happens.? There is also the S16, its about 10 brake down on the GTi6/Rallye but a good one can be had for about 2 grand.? I would be tempted to have a GTi6 again.? Hope that lot helps.

DOnt do it man, stay with the Golf !!!!!!!
-
I've just re-read what I wrote earlier on, all the words are there its just the order thats a bit off
On the whole, the Golf feels more solid, is nearly as quick, looks as good but the reliability and resale value are so much better. I personally would be put off buying a 306 with approaching 100K miles on it, but wouldn't mind as much with a Golf.
How many OLD peugeots do you see on the roads, 205's included? But how many VW's are still running about...

Cheers for the posts guys, I certainly won't be looking at one with any more than 70K on the clock, and preferably want the later of the phase 2 version, late S reg and on so looking at wrong side of ?4,000 for one.
Although I say all this but some bloke I work with is good friends with a guy who buys cars at auctions, cleans them up and passes them on for a small profit (at trade price to traders) and he's had a nice mk4 GTI lying about for a while, he was tempted himself for his wife, the lucky girl, only she turned it down for a focus C-Max ?! This mk4 has 70k on the clock, S reg so first of the Mk4, and he reckons for around ?3000, he's looking into for me, but sounds alright. He's had it for quite a while so could get a good price on it because he wants to shift it.
Anything I should watch out for - Should really post this on the mk4 bit I know!?
-
NO!!! its coz he's got an 8 valve! lol
Must admit that my 405 Mi 16 is much better round the twisty stuff!
-
If its a 2.0 GTi its got the same engine as the Mk3 GTi but with a fancy cover on the top. If its the 1.8 20v, this engine was only in the Mk4 for a short time before being replaced with the 8v!! Read into that what you want, bear in mind that the 8v carries on into the Mk5 and the Beetle whereas the 1.8 20v normally aspirated has died a death AFAIK.
I just sold a Seat Toledo V5 which is built on the same floorpan as the Golf/Bora and the build quality, ride quality etc were a massive leap over the MK3.
Yes, I have had a lot of cars, 40 to be precise...
-
Thanks for all that info, so presumably the 2 litre has the same 2 litre 8valve as the mk3 then, same as I've got now.
Could be tempting, see what this guy comes up with.
Thanks again mate.

Don't buy the GTI6 unless you like sticking bits of trim back on - that's when you're not soldering bits of wiring loom back together for a hobby. My mum has one and it's lovely to drive but it's rattling itself to pieces - just like every other Pug she's ever owned. The fact that the steering lock is compromised by the length of the six-speed gearbox sticking out the back of the engine bay is also a major irritant - it makes you look like you can't park!

Forgot the bit about the gearbox, it's a real pain in the ar$e.
-
Didnt the Mk4 2.0 GTIs have a 125bhp output and not the same as the mk3 8v?? :undecided:

Didnt the Mk4 20. GTIs have a 125bhp output and not the same as the mk3 8v?? :undecided:
Answered my own question here sorry!!....its the 1.8 non-turbo which is 125bhp

I did have a Pug 306 before the Golf, it was a V-reg, HDI D turbo, it was identical looking to the GTI6 but obviously Diesel. It looked good, handled very well but the Diesel just wasn't quick enough, only had it about 8 months, I took a loan out to buy it (at a shade under ?7k) and I'm still bloody paying it off now, I bought it 2 years ago!! Big mistake! Although I have to say, I never had any problems with trim falling off or wiring!? I don't get what you mean about the gearbox and making it look like you can't park?!? Did I miss read something there!?

In a word, yes  The GTi6 has a six speed gearbox, hence the 6 in the name. To get the sixth cog in the gearbox had to be extended, which meant it got in the way of the steering rack, so they had to reduce the amount of lock available so the turning circle is a hell of a lot worse than the Golf. Very fast and brilliant round bends though.
-
I doubt that you boys spend as much time as I do parking in supermarket car parks but believe me - it's a challenge in a GTi6 - and no, it's not me. I can fling my Golf or the OH's Slab into a space with no problem but the Pug is a nightmare.
P.S. Pug trim/electrics suicide takes a few years to kick in - but once it starts you'll know about it.
-
Hattie, what have you started?? Good thread.
BTW, had a tussle with a leon cupra r last night in my little old 8v.? Short straights and 90 deg bends and guess what, the gap between us at the start was the same at the end!!!? On the straights he would gain a bit, on the bends I left him a bit, chuffed to bits.? That's probably where the low down torque and 200KG less helped, his extra 110 brake? over mine didn't help him one little bit.
I know, I know, over longer straights blah blah blah....
Thats 2 Seat Turbos I've played with on this particular stretch and the first one couldn't leave me (Ibiza Cupra R) and this one couldn't catch me.? The first one had a race with my mate and left him for dead, he was driving a Nissan 300Z, "buts its got umpteen squintillion Brake" he says, but its not too good round the twisty stuff?

Sorry I see what you mean now (I did know what the 6 meant!!)
Thanks though for all your comments, they will be considered!
