Post by: HeidiG on 19 May 2010, 16:28
When iam driving say around town nothing happens but when i go on a run say travelling down a duel carrageway the engine STOP flash`s up and says Oil Pressure Low

I have checked the oil level and it is ok
The oil i use is Fuchs 5/30 fully synthetic

Any Ideas would be great

Iam having a few problems with it at the moment

Faulty sensor or you actually have low oil pressure. Get it checked before you wreck your engine.

Low oil pressure

Faulty sensor flashes up WORKSHOP (I know this as mine's up the swanny)

Most common cause is the strainer in the bottom of the sump.  You'll need to drain the oil and remove the sump to clean it all out

As Nick says get it checked out ASAP but avoid driving it unless its at a sedate pace on your way to a garage!  But ideally get it recovered

Rhyso has already told you above if it was the sensor it would flash up WORKSHOP. Therefore your car is likely running low oil pressure. You need to drop the sump off and clean out the strainer on the oil piump pick up pipe. DO not drive it till you have had this done or at least checked.

The pressure sensor itself is located on the block i believe  :undecided:

Sorry I was on about the oil level sensor  :embarassed:  that's in the bottom of the sump but if its faulty it would still flash up workshop

Either way get it checked out ASAP!! Low oil pressure = KABOOM and expensive rebuild

hi mate its an easy enough job to clean the sump, and a worth while one, ive had the dreaded sludge in the pick up and it can cause real damage if you dont get enough oil around the engine, do you use engine oil flush when changing the oil?

I would not use it until you get it checked.

quick note buy a new oil pickup pipe before attempting to clean the sump (£6 part from the stealers) when i did mine it was completely blocked with just a few pin sized holes remaining , saves spending a lot of time cleaning it out for a cheap part easy enough job to do off a pair of axel stands , ohh and gasket glue ftw to ensure no leaks :)

mine done this and it was the oil pressure switch. Oil gets in the switch and causes it to fail.

it's located on the block under the inlet manifold iirc. Check the pressure while you're at it...
