what type of bulbs go in the dash lights? can you buy them in motor factors or are they vw only are they easy to change any help greatly appreciated

T5 twist lock as far as I know...
Ebay 100's of 'em... LED & normal lots of colours too

You have to take the dash surround off which is only 5 screws look on the maint & info section at the top of this page...
sure there is a thread on it..
Then 4 screws on the dash dials.
There are 4 bulbs... in total... twist 'em out... Simple M8!!

Can be quite a tricky first time job - radio out, heater control sliders and panel off, remove dash blanks and switches, including headlight switch.
If I recall correctly, there is a screw in under the headlight switch, a screw under one of the switch blanks, one at the top of the radio opening, and two on the heater controls.
Remove the two screws holding the clocks in place then remove the lower dash tray on the driver's side for better access - it makes it easier for you to disconnect the clocks (you usually need to take the clocks out to change all the bulbs out, but you *may* get away with not having to disconnect the speedo cable if the MFA bulb doen't need changing.
Otherwise, disconnect the plug from under where the driver's tray was, then reach behind the clocks to disconnect the vacuum pipe. Finally, tackle the speedo cable. It's a push-clip which you need to release. I twist it and line it up so the clip is on the right hand side, then reach through the lower dash with my right hand, and round the back of the left hand side of the clocks with my left hand, and squeeze the clip with fingers from each hand. This is by far the worst bit of the job, especially if the cable is a little stiff.
The clocks should then slide out over the steering wheel. There are 3 bulbs - one on the MFA, one at the top of the speedo and one at the top of the rev counter.
Twist the bulbs to remove - sometimes they are a bit stiff, so a set of grips/pliers may be handy.
Refitting is the rreverse of removal as Hayne's says... just make sure you put the right screws back in the right places as some are different sizes. Oh, and whatever you do, make sure that ecverything in the dash works before you put it all back together.
As you may be able to tell, I've done this a zillion times...

On Here...
Make sure you have turned the dimmer up (on the light switch)!!! as it unusall to have ALL of them out... even after 20 years...
The bulb for the heater control will be self evedent when you take the controls off...

all sorted cheers guys, new bulbs were slightly different so put new bulbs in existing caps works a treat now oh and fixed stevie wonder stereo wiring whilst in there he gets around that bloke lol. :smiley:

Yeah he wired in the unit my car had fitted when I bought it... :laugh:

gets around doesnt he lol, just removed a carrier bag of old alarm wiring from front of car aswell it was everywhere hate dodgy wiring can cause so many future problems only had car 4 days oh well bk at it whats next on the list

No, it's a sealed unit, although probably could be split if you were brave enough.
I was lucky enough to buy a second hand one that looked like new.

heater controls work to now helps if the wires are connected to bulb lol, just need to find a couple of dash switch blanks and as good as it gets really at least its driveable in dark now :smiley:

If Leeroy20vt doesn't have any try ebay. I bought 3 as I was missing one, the other was modded by Ray Charles for the alarm light so I wanted to re-do that myself and a third as a spare. Got the lot including postage for £2.75.
