Title: mark 7 Golf 'out in 2 years'. Some kind of joke?
Post by: denyason on 18 May 2010, 22:12
auuto exxxpress say the mark 7 is out in 2 years.  what has happened to the 6 year life cycle.  only 3 years for a mark 6- that is unreal.  sounds to me the mark 6 is a bit of stop gap, sort of an in between model, more mark 5.6 than an official markX.  i did have my suspicions when i'd purchased the gti, it looked too similar to the mark 5 in terms of its silhouette but with some cosmetic changes.  now it looks we have bought a fad.  luckily i am keeping mine for 3 yrs max, just in time for the mark 7.   apparently it is a totally new model on a new platform- APPARENTLY!

Indeed the MK6 is just a face-lifted and tweaked MK5, this has been known since before the launch.

to be frank, if it wouldn't effect prices, I would rather they came out with a new one every year.

the front looks very similar to the new polo.  i sort of knew it was a facelift but was fooled by vw saying 'it was all new'.  my suspicions was clear with the mark 5 having no midlife facelift.  for a model (mark 6) that isn't really a fully new model is harsh when u consider the price they have charged us- 24 grand.  i bet some will feel short changed when u consider  a gti was only 19 grand(mark 5).  why would charge such a hike in price for a car that isn't really a fully new mark, but just a 'facelift'.

btw the mark 7 looks much sportier imo with a more aggressive stance. nice bump in the bonnet and i like the high backside with the angled window line

The GTi will probably be out sometime after the standard car is released so we have some time yet before the change, I hope!

As those images are photoshopped versions of the NCC/Jetta concept shown in New York in January, you can be fairly certain the next Golf won't look like that.

I'll be quite honest. Finding this out has annoyed me. But further to my honesty... I don't know why. My car is still excellent.

Below is my attempt to convince myself against this evil information:

Firstly I don't trust the magazine. The VW golf is a hugely popular car and therefore any news about it affects more people than say... the new Ferrari f4something...there fore any news will make people - a lot of people - read the magazine. Thus there is motive for the magazine to fabricate a story.

Secondly VW has never facelifted a car so dramatically. New lights, new interior, new body panels, new engine??? The reason they brought out the mk6 was to reduce the cost of making the mk5. Changing every single aspect (save running gear) Seems like a great way to cut cost.

The edition 30 and particularly the pirelli were run out's for the mark 5. Further to this argument face lifted models usually get a host of new kit to justify a moderate price hike. The mk6 does not have any more standard kit than a 5 did.

I might also consider that VW used the slot of the mark 6 (the generation title). If it was a facelifted mark 5 then I reckon they would have called it something as such rather than bring it out as a new car.

I think it's a fabrication to get some sales...

Also I have the edition where they said the new astra was coming about 31/2 years ago. It's only just out now.

Without being picky the MK6 comes with Centre armrest, mfsw, rear tints, highline and ipod connector thingy as std which the MK5 did not. :nerd:

I really don't care less the Mk 7 is coming out next year. I need a new car last July and the MK6 won me over after test drive most of the other cars on my wish list!

As I've said in another thread, why oh why would you want a Golf to look like a Roc ?

I'll keep my mk6 for a good while longer and if the mk7 actually looks like that monstrosity I'll get a TTRS.

I know its only a photoshop but why couldn't they have made the two pictures the same?

No aerial on the first car.
Side skirts are totally different on each car.
First car seems to have different lights that come right round to half the body panel compared to the second.

Any other differences?

I always understood the mk6 was a lot more than a facelifted mk5

I'm waiting for the Mk8 in 2016.  My Mk5 will be 8 years old then.

They did it to the Mk4 Polo and twice to the Passat (Mk3-Mk4 and Mk5 to Mk5.5) - all three had new bumpers, lamps, body panels, interiors, engines and chassis tweaks. It gets the longest life out of the best platforms, at times when profit margins are most important.

They did it to the Polo twice as well. MKII - MKIII and MKIV - MKV.

am1v:  "I would be very p!ssed off if they bring out a new GTi in 2 years."

Don't worry, it isn't going to happen. First of all, these Auto Express pictures are nothing more than the product of a gifted photoshopper with an over-active imagination. Secondly, before any new Golf comes, Audi urgently needs to launch a new A3. This isn't due until the end of next year and Audi will want this well and truly established before the next Golf makes an appearance, especially after the Golf Mk VI has all but killed sales of the current A3. Thirdly, sales of the Golf Mk VI are going so well, that it won't be replaced before MY 2013 with the GTI following a year later. That means GTI Mk VII arrives September 2013, at the earliest.

Keep dreaming. VW facelifts rarely last longer than 3 years. The 6N2 Polo only lasted 2 years. Expect MKVII Golfs late 2011 - early 2012 with the GTI hitting the streets mid 2012.

Pretty sure the new A3 lands this year.

As others have observed, the Golf 6 is a bit of an anomaly. There has been some debate about whether it was face-lift or a new model. Although based heavily on the Mk 5, Volkswagen fundamentally re-engineered the car to make it easier and less expensive to build. It might be better to call it the Golf Mk 5.5. That said, with so many sheet metal changes, that investment has to pay-off, so we should expect a 4 year replacement cycle, not the usual 3, as if it was just a regular mid-life facelift.

I don't know where you get your information about a new GTI by 2012, Horney, but with all due respect, I think you are being somewhat over-optimistic. I have no access to inside information on this, but i do read the German car mag, Auto Motor und Sport. One of their lead writers, Georg Kacher, also writes for the UK's Car Magazine. He says late 2012 (MY2013) for the new Golf and 2013 for the new GTI (MY 2014). I found him to be very reliable over the last 20 years.

The 3-door A3 coupe will debut either late this year or early 2011. The 5-door A3 Sportback will debut a year later. A new Golf usually follows 12 months after a new Audi A3. However, given that sales of the current A3 are so uninspiring, the launch date may well be brought forward. Since Audi is launching an RS3 version of the current A3, this will be allowed to sell for at least 6 months before a new A3 model comes along to replace it.

no point getting one's knickers in a twist - new GTI will be out 2012/2013 - which is 3-4 years after this one, a car gets boring after having it that long, so it'll be time to get the new version - simples!  and with any luckk it will be better and quicker so happy days!

Got to say - will have to be something special to upgrade to a Mk7 so quickly as we love the Mk6 and it ticks all the boxes.
At first we were unsure re moving from Mk5 to Mk6 as we thought seems a bit of a rip off etc, but all the little changes add up and some of the new toys I spec'd such as the rear view cam \ RCD510 etc combined with the lovely new interior. That was what sold it for me. Oroginally we were going for a M3 or 335i saloon or a new E class - but when took out the mk6 and experianced the new interior and toys - was a case of where do I sign.

Hate the current A3 \S3 it's so dull to sit in and look at - very bland vs the mk6 gti.
However..... if the new A3 is as nice as the current GTI AND they bring out an RS3 with more power than the R and expect 0-60 in sub 5 seconds please! - then would upgrade to the RS3 as long as it's not a silly price such as same as an M3 4 door saloon!
