Title: how to replace water pump mk3

hi is there a how to replace water pump on this site for a mk3 gti 8v i need to know what needs to be removed to get to the pump regards gaz.

take the alternator & bracket off and you'll see the pump, its held on with 4 bolts/studs. need to swap the pump over and I'd advise a new thermostat and plastic flange

I need to do the same myself, any chance of a more detailed how to with pics  :smiley:

is it an easy job as i'm a beginner when it comes to diy mechanics.

dont have many pics unfortunatly but there are 2 types of alt setup on the big block engines. 1st type has a big spring under the alternator to set tension, 2nd type has a seperate tensioner wheel.

1st type, loosen the 2 bolts holding the alternator on, then use something to press the alternator downwards on the spring. (I use my foot!) then tease the belt off.  Then press down on the alternator enough to allow you to remove the lower bolt.

2nd type, geat a large adjustable spanner and fit it over the tensioner wheel arm, then pull the spanner to release the tension on the belt and remove. Then loosen top alt bolt, remove bottom bolt.

now disconnect the 2 pin plug, and undo the nut and remove the larger battery cable. For safty sake you should disconnect the battery before you do this, but if you feel brave cover the end of the cable to prevent it from shorting and put somewhere safe.  Now rotate the alternator up on the top bolt, and you'll now be able to see the 4 nuts holding the alternator bracket to the engine, if you cant get them out now you'll have to take the top bolt out as well and remove the alternator entirely.  Undo the 4 nuts, and look towards the bottom of the bracket and you'll see 1 last bolt through the PAS pump & alternator bracket. Remove this and the alternator + bracket will come off the engine, set to 1 side.

Now you can see the waterpump, should be pretty obvious from here what is required to remove it :)

some pics, you can see here the 2 types, and if you look towards the bottom you can spot the last bolt hole holding the alt bracket to the pas pump bracket:
