Hi.
I called my local VW dealer were I got our GTI from regarding finding out cost of the rear LED lights and also finding out if OEM connectors exist \ cost to fit etc.
They were initially unsure if they could be retrofitted as not been asked before etc. So they investigated and called me back with prices etc about an hour later:
Price for rear LED cherry red ones (lighter ones on GTI) were about £538 for the set - Darker ones on R were about £20 more.
Regarding connectors - they couldn't get any part numbers for connectors so they think they were plug and play \ need to be custom fitted etc.
Regarding fitting - they had no idea and couldn't find out if they fitted to the wiring loom as above - guessed a couple of hours to fit.
So in a nutshell they sounded very - iffy about retrofitting them \ connections etc - and from this initial call sounds like looking at best part of about the £700 mark to supply and fit.
Is there anyone else who's contacted VW on this or anyone from VW who can advise re the connectors etc?

I knew all about this and did not bother wasting my time discussing this with VW.
SteveP is the man.

Agreed. Dealers usually know less about the cars than us nerds do

lol - just thought I'd cross check to see prices (expected to be higher - but wow!). Main interest to me was the connectors to see if there was an OEM VW one or if the newer cars woul have different connectors to use the LED lights from the get go.
Also... if we fitted out own and made our own connectors, then use VAG com to update the cars computer as has been done via the group buy, - does the invalidate the warrenty? Again think this would be of interest if anyone from VW on here could advise!

No it will not affect the overall warranty. I have checked this with my Warranty Manager. The VW Warranty will not apply to the LEDs. There will be a separate warranty for the LEDs as a retro-fit by VW if these are purshased from and fitted by VW or one from SteveP if he provides such a thing. Not a huge worry. Just inform your Insurance Company as it will cost you more if you tell them now, or leave it until the GTis have LEDs as standard fit when it will be standard equipment and therefore there will be no increase in Insurance Cover (hopefully).

fantastic - thanks for the quick answer!
So VW doesn't have OEM connectors then - you have to get custom made ones etc?

Don't know and don't care!

I won't say that just yet. Theres still alot of concern about playing with byte 18 of that control module.

There's four million pages there Snoops, and the footies on so could you just tell us the rough areas of concern pretty please?
-
Just read the bits by the the ross-tech guys, you know the ones who are vagcom
-
Snoopy I read this post the other day and can't recall any "concern" about coding the LED lights. Its just a bit hit and miss at present due to the differing combinations of rear lights. Was there something specific?
-
^^^ Correct, Ross Tech are currently gathering scans of cars factory and retro fitted with the lights before they up date the software to allow this bit be to changed via the long coding helper from what I can understand. :nerd:
As for Jellycats question, the LED's do have a different connector (a much smaller one) and there is currently no VW plug and play adapters.
I (like many other people on ebay.de) make these, the key difference being I make them out of original VW connectors and repair wires, and wrap them in VW original wiring loom webbing tape.
The bits required to make these adapters are £65 (list rrp inc VAT) from VW.
