im wondering if its my idle stableiser ?
sometimes when i start the car wether the car is hot or cold
it just sits there at about 2000 revs only for about 30secs max..
next, the knock sensor is breaking would 1 off mark3 golf fit ?
-
give us some clues, what year/engine is it
-
G,reg (89) its a 1.8gti pb engine code
-
Mine used to do this if started when warm, revs would climb slowly to between 1500/2500 but would sort itself out after a few gear changes. Now it wont idle at all when cold

check for air leaks around the engine bay, and make sure the throttle is hitting the stop firmly and not being held open by the throttle cable or anything. also check the idle switch clicks when the throttle is closed fully, and the wiring to the throttle switches isnt snapped. the idle switch is the one underneath the throttle body so you cant get to it unless you take the inlet boot off.

everything like that seems ok.. would the idle stabliser being dirty or the knock sensor being cracked make any differance..
cleaned the engine bay the other day only a quick wap over though

isv might be a cause, I'd have a mlooky in scrappy for early 2e code MK3 gti, those will fit. also passat/vento with same engien, also likely to be a bit better than a GTI as they'rer generally owned by boy racers. the afm off the same car is compatible with MK2 also. the knock sensor from any vag 1.8-2.0 8v will work, have a good look around zee scrappy. I used an audi 2.0 8v one on my MK2

Make sure the part number is the same on the ISV and also make sure you torque a replacement knock sensor to the correct value when you fit it.

well i havnt fitted the know sensor yet but ive changed the idle stabliser and so far so good no random reving up to 1500revs ??
the knock sensor dosnt match the numbers on my other 1 will that matter then it came off a mk3 golf gti 2E engine code same as the idle stabliser.. cant find 1 for my car with that serial number ??

yeah it'll work fine :)
