Title: When do you need the stereo security code?
Post by: Ess_Three on 13 May 2010, 10:36
If you unplug a RCD510/RNS510 to fit a Bluetooth module, and plug it back into the same car, do you need the secirity code?

The power plug will be unplugged..so I'd assumed you'd need the code.
I can find no reference to my code anywhere...
...and have read you don't need it if going back into the same car.

So, will I need the code?

I'd rather not unplug to then find out I do!

Cheers,
Glen.

When I installed my Fiscon into a RCD510 I didn't need to put the code back in. The unit powered up with no problem.
I've also read the code is embedded in some electronics in the car so as long as the head unit stays in the same car, you won't need the code

It only asks you the very first time the stereo is plugged in.
I installed an RNS510 and it asked me for the code.  I then swapped back and forth between the RCD / RNS a few times, and it never asked me again.  When I put a VIM adapter between them though - it did ask again!

It seems VW no longer hand out stereo codes with the car as people leave them in the glove box - making them an easy target!

^^^^ I was given the code with my RCD510. Not a card but it had been written on the RCD510 instruction booklet.
Just as well as it would create problems when I go to sell it.

I asked my dealer for the code, and they said they'd give me a proper card for selling my RCD.
