Hi, I'm mid-way through putting a 1.8t AGU engine from a '99 A3 into my Mk3 but have come across a few stumbling points. I have a donor car at work where I'm doing the conversion so have all the parts out of both cars available.
Firstly, what I've done so far:
1. Fitted the engine and box (from the A3) into the golf (have changed the engine mounts to diesel 1's as I've heard they're the same as a 16v and the fit the engine in fine.
2. Changed the pedal box over to accommodate the hydraulic clutch
3. Relocated all the under bonnet 'stuff' (washer bottle, PAS reservoir etc.) to where it was in the A3, using mostly A3 brackets and a few home made ones), I know it sounds like hard work but i want the car to look like it came out of the factory with this engine already in it, plus I haven't seen it done before and where these things are on the Golf doesn't with the A3 airbox.
4. Spliced the old Golf and A3 looms together, matching up the like-for-like wires.
5. Fitted a golf mk3 diesel intercooler (for now), it's not ideal but its the same size as the one from the standard A3 so shouldn't damage the performance (or so I hope!!)
Now for the problems:
1. After wiring the car up the car cranks but won't start (I'm thinking an Immobiliser problem??? if so is there anyway to recode it or even get it removed?)
2. What are the best radiator hoses to use (the rad I have is from an 8v)?
3. What can i do about the oil cooler pipes, I know you have to rotate the cooler itself to get around the engine mount but I'd like to keep the A/C so don't want to foul up the back on the compressor.
4. Does anybody know of an intercooler that i can fit into the front of the car without having to chop the car to pieces (too much)?
5. The master cylinder sits very close to the head at the moment, I don't think it will be a problem but it doesn't look 'nice' (which we all know is a big problem :P)
Oh, and P.S. is anyone looking to get rid of a set of konig seats relatively cheaply??π

LazyLunatic did the conversion on his mk3, so you might want to PM him.
Here's the thread > http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=78315.0

you might want a better radiator....
-
the immobiliser needs the ecu to talk to the clocks and the chip in the ignition key (via a reader coil in the ignition barrel)
If you don't have the clocks or key then you might be stuck because i don't think there is anyone who can immo-defeat the m3.8 1.8t ECUs.. only the later me7.5 stuff. You could get a set of clocks, loom, reader coil with a key/immo chip taped to it and code it all to work together with the right tools.
On top of that the immobiliser actually allows the engine to fire & start for 1 - 2 seconds before cutting out, so i'd say you have other issues there too. Have you wired the obd port in to scan for faults?
Keeping the OEM management has lots and lots of advantages when it comes to conversions but you have to do it all and do it properly to reap the rewards, otherwise you're better off going with a qpeng conversion or similar.

Thanks for the help
Topher, yes I've wired everything in, the only recurring fault codes are in the engine ecu and are:
1. ecu locked
2. idle control throttle position fault (which shouldn't stop the car from starting??)
-
does everything include clocks and key?
if so it may just need re adapting - are you using vagcom to read the codes? the adaption can be done with that.
what are the exact codes btw?
-
I've tried resetting the adaptations but it says i need a login code. Any ideas about this?
I'm away from work for a few days now but I'll get the codes off of it when I go back in
-
are you pressing "read" before you hit the save button? it wont work otherwise
what version of vcds are you using?

Old thread alert  , do a search loads of threads on this subject.

I know there is loads of threads but cant find anywhere where it tells u wire for wire

http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?205887-OEM-management-wiring-1-8T-gt-Mk2-harness-install-FAQ
for a mk2 using ce2 fusebox which is the same as the mk3. read the whole thread as many questions are asked and answered, and any differences with the mk3 are explained
-
Thanks dan but unless im bein stupid its still not what im lookin for i got a 1.8t agu fittin in a mk 3 golf 8v just need to do wiring conversion need wire coulers n stuff
-
thats pretty much exactly what that thread is about! you need an agu loom and a 8v loom matching your engine, that thread tells you how to splice them together
-
Iv got both my agu and my 8v looms but that link if for a auq loom which is diff from the agu from the wires n plugs i got only a few wires match up!iv only got 3 plugs on my agu loom is this right?
-
no you need a full agu engine loom with a plug for everything on the engine plus the ecu, it comes in 2 parts like the loom in the thread and should look pretty much the same there aren't that many differences between different 1.8t looms. The end result will be mk3 loom at fusebox side and mk4 loom at engine side
I'd suggest if you cant make full sense of the thread then don't attempt it yourself. I considered doing my loom myself but when I got both looms together and sat down to do it decided it was a bit beyond my skills, there are people around who can do it for around £100 if you supply the looms and in the grand scheme of the conversion that isn't very much imo. I had mine done by Rubjonny on clubgti or f17bad on here has some contacts as well

Many thanks for your help iv made sense of it now i think haha i hadnt read it properly as im using my phone but printed it out and could see everything!still might end up paying tho haha many thanks mate
