Title: Jamex Coilies Fitting
Post by: zdebx on 10 May 2010, 23:13
Finally got my coilies today, but I have no idea/tools how to fit them.

So will have to go to a garage and get them fitted. Just wondered how much am I looking at?

Unless someone want to fit them for me

Crappppp  Almost as much as the coilies themselves.

If you do them yourself you need a special tool, it's a Allen key spanner combination. It is not that difficult to do, just need to set it up properly.

tool can be manufactured from an allen key, 21mm socket, mole grips and a grinder.

then the top mounts can be removed with a screwdriver and hammer.

you will need spring compressors if your reusing your topmounts.

£150 coilover fitting procedure:

Pick up coilovers.
Walk to bin.
Place coilovers in bin.
Walk away understanding you've just avoided wasting a lot of time and discomfort.

I have ordered new ones after your post, but what's wrong with using the old ones?

they will be fooked in no time and fail then you have to take it all to bits again to fit new ones, seen it so many times by people who didnt bother in the first place, you have made the right choice here withoubt doubt

Hope they will be fine. Thanks Kells.

Called a few places today, and half of the people didn't even know what I was talking about, lol

They go like "ignition coil?" "Is that springs or shocks?"

Then talked a guy, who seemed alright, and he said £150, but might do it cheaper. Just wants to see the kit

I fitted Jamex coilovers 2 weeks ago, it was really easy. I would recommend doing it yourself with a mate.......... On the front top mounts all you need is a 21mm spark plug socket and 7mm allen key + a bar to lever the allen key. This is if the impact gun will not do it. The  back is ridiculously easy to do.........

Found this > http://forum.performancevwmag.com/viewtopic.php?t=40697

So tempted to do it myself, but not confident, plus don't want to do it on my own and don't know anyone who knows sh!t about coilovers :D

£150 for JUST fitting coilies, feels like wasted money.

Hi mate dunno where you are in London but if you pop down to Bromley one night after my work I'll happilly help you install the coilovers.

I'm an apprentice mechanic but have now done countless suspensions. There are also two other fully qualified mechanics just down the road who will hapilly check them over after for a drink.

Will have access to air tools and ramp.

Might be dumb question, but are there top mounts for the rear?

I bought a "full car set" top mounts and bearings, but got only 2 top mounts and 2 bearings...Is that how it's supposed to be or it's a mistake?

Do you HAVE to put the car on jack stands before you adjust the coilies?
Title: Re: Jamex Coilies Fitting

it would be an advantage, as you need the wheel off to get to them

One more stupid question....

See those blue plastic rings between the springs? What are they? Do you have to take them off or leave them?

leave them on mate.

and watch those rubber bump stops in the bigger spring , as two of mine got shredded.  so got some of the new jamex bumpstops that are harder texture and wont spilt.

They are fitted now, although very little drop...40/20  Can't go any lower, because arch work will be required, but even now the splitter sometimes catches on the speedbumps, and I have to go sideways  over them  :undecided:

For some reason the rear springs rub? WTF?

Pics will be in the project thread soon.

should not rub, had mine way lower than that with my 8j wide rims same rubber too but iv also got 30mm adapters. i had to have my arches rolled and pulled to get it down as much as it is now, is it just the plastic GTI trim it catches, ? if so file it down matey
Title: Re: Jamex Coilies Fitting
Post by: zdebx on 20 May 2010, 21:34
Yeah, I think it is the trim, but I'm quite happy with the drop to be honest and it looks good too.

Will get the pics soon, and you will agree
