Hello,
I am trading my impreza in for a 2/3 year old mkv Gti and I need to know what sort of thing I need to be looking for.
I went out for a test drive in an 06 plate Gti this evening and I was very impressed. But I noted that the engine was rather rattley almost like a diesel to be honest. The dealers are going to look into it but I wondered if it was a sign of a problem or is it just a common thing that happens?
Thanks in advance,
Solly

common problem is the cam belt, make it sound noisy on tick over, i had mine done at about 25k under warranty luckily. stering rack issues do get mentioned from time to time ive not experienced it. on modified cars the manual clutches struggle a little too. other than that they are solid. id say try a DSG and make sure the cam belt is OK, only downside with DSG is the oil needs changing, but not as often as engine oil, VW state 40k.

I would love to see a used mkv gti guide on here.
There is an excellent new/picking up from showroom checklist, but most of the points arent relevant.
Edit: I don't even own a mk5, so i feel like a bit of a dick for even writing this, but from what i've picked up:
Check all dash lights light up when you turn the key to ignition position 1
Check for white worm/scuffs on the alloys
Check no condensation in the lights (especially the centre rear brake light)
If DSG, check it doesnt lurch from neutral.
Check cambelt has been done at the correct interval (60k?)
Apparently some of the 04 or early 05's had some interior build quality issues, i.e. rattling(!)
Also, not specific to mk5's, but when buying any used car, this checklist comes highly recommended (by me lol)

.........mine was the same mate. Get them to check the ''small' cam chain & tensioner (right hand side of engine as you look under bonnet). Mine was very worn & that was the cause of the rattle.Ok cold but when warm rattled like a diesel.

Other way round, the earlier ones were slightly better built by all accounts.

If you're looking at a DSG make sure it's had the special DSG service at the correct intervals.

Yep, you dont get big horrible ariel as its built into the rear heater element. You get a 10 speaker setup (instead of the 8 later MYs get). You get silver ashtray cover. You get a (nicer, debatable?) blue tint (that the R32 gets) to your windscreen rather than the later MYs green tint.
Ummmm thats all I can think of right now. VW cost cutting on later models made them debateably less "well built".
-
........as above mine is 05 reg & has all the above. The blue tinted glass always gets loads of comments when it's been parked in the rain or covered in condensation after a night shift.

worth checking that the rear LED brake light works. recently found out that they commonly fail and can cost up to £400 to repair due to need to rip spoiler off the car ! Also worth asking if cam belt has recently been done. looking at dealer price of at least £400 to change.
also might be worth trying to get a decent stereo. my 06 came with the RCD300 single shot cd player (crap!). you want at least the RCD310 mp3 version (with silver buttons) or the RCD500 multi cd player. I tried upgrading mine to the RCD510 touch screen SD card MP3 player. Drained the battery completely as its only compatible with 08 models on - avoid!
enjoy !

Are you definitely sure it wasn't the firmware? The first versions of the RNS510 (all singing dancing sat nav unit etc) had some issues where it would drain the battery, but this could be corrected with a firmware re-flash to a newer software version.
-
it wasnt the sat nav version it was the rcd510
spent ages looking into the issue and few other people had same issue. was something to do with the electronics wiring in the car which was changed on 08 models

You need to upgrade the CAN gateway to avoid the problem. As said a firmware downgrade is an alternative way to solve the problem with the RNS510 so its possible the same solution will work for the RCD :undecided:

The usual things; full service history, not rough owner (Quintin "Rough people, rough cars), no homemade mods, not an ED30 unless driven by a little old lady (way too many crashed and repaired), not an 05 (catch fire), check DSG is smooth, don't buy a manual (too much risk of an over-revved engine), 5 doors not 3 for easy resale, red colour if possible (safer and less likely to be crashed), no sweaty smell, and finally don't pay a penny more for any of the costly original extras such as xenons, leather seats etc., they are not worth a bean to a secondhander.
Consider a set of secondhand wheels to fit winter tyres. After a 4wd subaru you will hate the wheel spin and axle tramp when the temperature drops below 6C and your summer tyres just don't work.
Burn the baseball cap.

Its 55 plates that seem to be prone to spontaneous combustion Egbert, keep up
On that note, this makes for interesting reading ... http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,14440.0.html

Err - totally disagree, Perhaps predictable response from a 5 door Tornado red DSG owner. OK, fsh is a no-brainer but otherwise I'd suggest wide of the mark - a) I reckon ED30 ownners are probably even more meticulous about their cars b) manual cars are equipped with a magical device known as a rev limiter and appeal to those peculiar people (me included) who still enjoy the opportunity to choose a ratio from time to time (and yes - my wife has a Mk6 DSG) c) Tornado red doesn't tend to float the boat of the majority of GTI owners d) are you really suggesting that a car with leather/xenons/sat nav doesn't attract a premium compared to a poverty-spec model. e) 5 doors v 3 doors is a practicality v aesthetic choice f) not too many '05 plates really catch fire....
-
I also own all the above. An Edition30 in red (dsg). The Car that Egbert wishes he could afford a year so after he bought his :lipsrsealed: But wont admit it.

I could afford 100 Ed30s.
Sorry 700

Ok, I see that there are some interesting points made by some owners. Thanks for all the advice. I'm probably going to go towards the manual box as I know the dsg is quicker but I think I'll miss that clutch pedal!
I'm probably going to buy from a dealer as i want the warranty and the 2 years service package, therefore being able to ensure the cambelt is done on a service and the warranty covers it if it was to go wrong before the service takes place. The only things I want is steel grey or black and leather.
What's this about the stereo draining the battery? I was going to change upto the model with the sd card slot but is it advisable to not?
Spontaneous explosion? For real? :shocked:Which year should I avoid?
I was looking for a model with the monza 2 alloys, 18s. Anybody know how much they are to buy if I get a model with the 17's?
Thanks
p.s the baseball cap is staying!! It's in a drawer with all of the other unused clothing!

On the forums there are isolated tales of Mk5 Golfs catching fire spontaneously - but it doesn't necessarily seem to be restricted to GTIs or a specific plate - I wouldn't let it effect your choice > in relative/statistical terms it is far more likely to be stolen, driven into or even flooded !
Monza 18's look great and give the car a nicer stance - they were near the top of my want list also - until I drove an "18" equipped car and realised I couldn't live with the harsh ride (OK I'm getting old, but in my defence my weekend car is a TVR and that rides OK). Cambelt change at 60K / 4 years is essential but don't get too hung up about buying a car where this work is imminent as it is a good bargaining tool and , in real terms, the necessary work is equivalent to the cost of 2 new front tyres and a full tank of petrol.
Best advice I can give is that, irrespective of whether it's a poverty spec base model or a fully loaded ED30, the quality, reliability and dynamics of the car will shine through and delight you. The only provisos would apply to any car purchase a) buy the best you can afford and b) make sure it's been well loved and has a complete and fully documented service history.

There have been a few reports on here of cars catching fire, coincidence or otherwise they all seem to be 55 plates. Read this link for what I think is almost definately the cause.
http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,14440.0.html
I think all the reports I've seen on here have been from people who had very recently purchased their car so to me this theory holds together very well.
As said though, it is not a widespread problem and I wouldn't let it worry you.
