My 8v Mark 2 has just started to misfire on startup which clears after about 10 seconds and then runs fine after this. When left for about 5 hours....the same problem will arise...any ideas?

Try changing your leads, mine was doing this, and after changing the leads it stopped doing it

A mate has suggested that it could be a leaking head gasket and the rough running is moisture evaporating!! Any ideas?

I'm not convinced its anything to do with the head gasket.........I'd put it towards the end of your list of things to check.
At the top of the list I would put leaking injectors. A common problem is for the injectors to leak after shut down causing the engine to be initially flooded on startup.

I had this on my 91 8v and it was the timing, i got it rolling roaded and the timing was out by 20 degrees :o Once the timing had been sorted it started perfectly every time.
Hope this helps.

20 degrees is quite a way out, I'm suprised it even started at all.
Its a good point though, ignition timing can effect starting.

Im not sure whether I have a slight water loss too

Head gasket has just moved higher up the list after reading that. Have you got any emulsion (creamy deposits) on the bottom of the oil fill plug or thereabouts?

its a 91 8 valve in oak green lovely looking car for ?1600...so far replaced cam...full service...discs and pads...new cobra cat 1 (as its street parked in london) sony cd head unit...sony explode speakers in the door pods with original grills....only one prob...its 5 door...but practical

no mayo at all...and no oil in water....just the misfire...you dont even need to rev it for it to clear....if you let it idle the misfire stops in 5 seconds...someone else suggested rotor arm could be burnt out?

It was 20 degrees advanced , the rolling road bloke said that it wouldn't have made too much difference to high revs, it would have just taken away the power from low revs. When he reset the timing it felt like a new car! The power is all through the rev range now ;)

All seems to be fine.....rotor arm and cap seem a little burnt so may get a new one... from GTI.com they all seem to think its the head gasket...may take the plugs out to see if I can see a clean bore? Anyone had a head gasket blow on them before? My cam cover nut look truely rusted on!! Water loss i think was due to the seal in the cap not being in the correct position!!

I have just replaced my HT leads, dizzy cap, plugs and rotor arm, and this has not cleared my problem.
My car starts great then after about a secound runs like sh!t for 3 or 4 seconds and then brilliantly, but I believe I have a leaking valve or injector, my golf is an 86 GTi, with the K-jet engine, I would expect the injectors or valves to be worn, as the poor old pensioner has 192K on the clock now. I might retire it at 200K.
It could be the timing as my car does pink a hell of a lot, running on un-leaded, but it does not run any better on LRP.
Regards.
Dean.

I used to have a MK1 Scirocco Storm that had the same problem but for a longer duration, the injectors were leaking and if left for a couple of hours it would need to be left turning for about 15 seconds to start it, I assume to build up pressure in the system that has subsided and also because it would be flooding and needed to clear itself out to fire. If the car was left for say 10 mins it would start up no worries first turn of the key.

I had this problem on my 16v KR. I replace the injector 0-rings and it resolved the problem on startups. Old rings shrink when cold and cause vacume leaks, but they expand when hot causing a good seal.
It depends if your 8v is K-jectronic or Digifant though.

Mine is a Digifant? So is there O rings on the injectors? I have never had them off
