CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW I CAN TELL IF THE GT TDI I AM ABOUT TO BUY IS 130 OR 150 BHP?
??? :-\
-
If it's a 150 all 3 letters in TDI will be red also as you look at the car from the front there are two scoop like holes in the front valance the one on the passenger side is an air intake the other is blanked off. Hope this helps.
-
if it's new then the 130 has a 5 speed box and the 150 a 6 speed one.
-
I asked the same question of my local dealer last week. He said "the 130 diesel will have TDI on the back, the 150 diesel will have GTI because it is based on the petrol GTI floor pan" perhaps this would only apply to current models though ? kind regards, yt.
-
That sounds right actually, my 2002 150 had GT TDI (TDI in red ) on the back but when I changed it for a 2003 model ( because I needed a 5 door ) it has GTI on the back.
-
On a similar note...
My 1.8t GTI has no red letters but is the 150bhp version.
It's a 2000 V reg, is this pre-red letters?
-
I'm not really familiar with the petrol car coding, doesn't the red I on the petrol car mean that it's the turbo model (180 bhp )?
-
From what I have worked out, when the GTi models were launched the non turbo used all silver letters with the 1.8 Turbo models using the red 'i'.
When the non-turbo models increased in capacity they then became badged as 2.0 GTi (all in silver) and the Turbo models stayed as GTi, but with the red 'i' replaced with a silver one.
PD150 models are badged as GTi with the red 'i' and all other PD models are badged as TDi's
This means that all models are now identifiable by the badging on their bootlid alone, providing you know what year they are, as they are all running with unique badging on model by model basis.
However, for the nerds amongst us (myself included ;) ) there are plenty of other visual clues as to which model is which!
-
Give us the visual clues then please.
-
Whats the performance like on the 150bhp tdi?
-
Vrooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom. Absolutely superb mate. Pulls like a train in all 6 gears.
-
I got a vr6 (well quite obvious), i must admit i am interested in a tdi now, 150bhp sounds good. The problem with diesels used to be theres no point in having lots of torque if theres no power to deliver it. But with 150bhp i don't think thats a problem anymore ;D
-
I have the TDI 150 (labelled as a GTI) for a year now and every time I drive it I still have a huge grin on my face. The pull is fantastic (have a mate who drives a Audi TT 225bhp model and when he had a go in my car he was driving round goggle eyed, couldn't believe the poke it had!) and even though it's a diesel, when your cruising along at 90mph in 6th gear you're only doing about 2000rpm so it's actually a really quiet ride as well. And I actually quite like the roar it gives when you're accelerating away, nice and throaty!
Next model of Golf is going to eventually have a 2.5 TDI in it, god knows what thats going to be like!!
-
Sounds interesting.....

Give us the visual clues then please.
Right, starting outside; PD 150 is based on GTi Turbo suspension settings, PD130 is based on non turbo, which means PD150 sits 15mm lower than 130.
Next, wheels. Providing both cars are still on standards, PD150's run 16" Montreal 2's whilst PD130 run 15" five spokes.
Look inside the car next. PD150's came with fifth rear headrest as standard, the 130 did not. Curiously, the centre armrest comes as standard on the 130, but is not available on the 150. Also, the 150 comes with very dark wood dash inserts, the 130 does not have these. See, I told you I was a nerd!
I'm sure there are plenty more visual clues, but hey, its early in the morning. My advice, if all else fails and you still can't tell, try and blow him away. If it is another PD150 the worst that can happen is you can't overtake!!!

Whats the performance like on the 150bhp tdi?
Pretty special to be honest.
My previous 'relationship' with a diesel had not been pleasant, but I was pressured into picking a diesel by my boss, who was concerned that my choice of car (MG ZS 180 2.5V6) would yield horrendous fuel bills! Budget too tight to get a BMW 330 diesel, I picked the PD 150 on the basis of all the articles in motoring mags that had been written about it - so much so that I didn't even test drive one before I ordered it.
What a good choice I made!
It pulls and pulls and pulls. Providing you remember this is no V-Tec (it's done its best by 3750rpm, and its pointless going beyond 4000 rpm) you could never be disappointed.
I don't get much chance to enjoy it during the week - the mornings are a sleepy 95mph cruise down the A1 into london, the evenings a 35mph crawl home, but at the weekend I get to have some fun! It is one of those geniunely quick cars where you can put yourself on the wrong side of the road, see traffic coming towards you, yet still make it past whatever you're overtaking, with plenty of room to spare.
What you have to remember is 236 lbft of torque and six speed box makes a quick car. You will be v surprised to see what you can keep up (and humiliate!)
But, that still isn't the best thing about it.
Turbo whistle is.
Any PD 150 owner will tell you that these puppies whistle like nothing you've ever heard before. My buddy had a MY01 Scoob imprezza (which, once rolling couldn't pull away from me :)) was gutted when he first heard me go whistling up the street, because his never sounded that good! Garaunteed head swiveller from 100 yards!
-
Yep, that turbo whistle is preeeeety sweet!
-
My 150 has all the things you talk about apart from the 5th headrest >:( still only have 2 on the rear seat with no holes for the 5th!!!! Any ideas?
-
I really don't know on that one!! I've just been on to the VW website, and checked the standard spec of the PD150. I went to the options page (http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new_cars/golf_hatch/options) to check that the specs haven't changed since I got mine new last July, and it hasn't - the PD150 should have 3 point seatbealt and headrest for middle rear passenger. :o ???
That said, we've already highlighted with the badge thing that the only consistency with trim demarcation is its inconsistency, so why should the actual trim be any different!!!
Next time you go in for a service, quiz your dealer about an FOC retro-fit if you want one.
I always use the fifth headrest as a indicator to which model they are before I engage in 'challenge' mode, so if you want to surprise some other PD150 drivers who use the same tell-tale sign (maybe even me??!! AND you want to preserve some rearward vision) stick without it! ;D
-
It has the 3rd seat belt though!!!!! The car is an import so would that have anything to do with it??????? Everything else is correct. Ta.
-
:o ???
That is confusing!!!
If you have the 3 point seat belt, not just the lap belt, you would have thought that the headrest should be there as well. Depends on how your relationship is with your dealer, I'd try and tap 'em up for one, gratis!!!
-
Sorry, just took a look at it. It's a lap dancing belt! ;D
-
I wouldn't be complaining if I had a lap dancer in the back of my GTi!!! ;D ;)
-
Not complaining at all!!!!!! The wife may have something to add though!!!!
Just got my red "TDI" badge today from VW. Not sure what to do with it now though ??? Might stick it under the silver GTI badge???? Waddya think?
-
I'd loose the 'i' from your all silver GTi badge and have a GTTDi :)
-
Just put the TDI under the silver GTI. looks rather good I think.
-
Just to confuse the badge thing even more, I saw my first PD with an all red TDi badge last night on the way home. Thing is, it was on a PD130! ???
I honestly think there is no specific badging protocol at all - it seems they'll stick on anything that's lying around. As long as it leaves the factory and doesn't say Passat on the bootlid I think they give themselves a pat on the back and carry on!! :o
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Gonna take mine off now :'(
-
On my way to work this morning I saw a golf with GTIDI, with the DI in red letters, on the back. It looked pretty rubbish really. Plus it was on a PD130!
