Ok, so I got a fuel leak, right next to the fuel pump, it turned out to ne the fuel pipe that runs the entire length of the car. Went to GSF to get some new pipe and they informed me that the parts no longer made, the bloke behind the counter, fyi he has a mk1 G60, WOW, anyhoo, he had one esp made, cost him?200.... Dont really want to spend that much so has anyone got any ideas please???
-
sorry no real thought that don't sound a bit cowboyish!!! but just out of interest, was that gsf in farnham?? if so i remember chatting to the guy about his mk1 its a 1900 as well isn't it? never seen it but apparently its sh!t off a shovel!!! he also told me he made his own traction control to help get the power down by modding an abs unit or something?
-
If it is the steel pipe that runs along the floor that is leaking due to corrosion, replace it with copper pipe. Easy to bend and won't rot and available from your local diy store.
Steve.

Cheers Geez, gonna pop down to homebase in a moment!!! Have you tried it?? Yes, it was the Farnham branch, that guys the don when it comes to MK1's, wish I could employ him as my machanic!!! Anyhoo, just FYI mailed a guy at http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/ and he was well helpful!!! told me to try http://www.automec.co.uk/ ... Looks VERY promising, have to ck them out during the week!! Off to Homey now!!!
-
Yup, defo go to Automec - it's really your only option.
I think the piping is CuNi - DONT use copper!!! Will work harden and not right for the job
check out www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk if not already there - should be big discussions on doing this job and I think soon one of our members is going to post a 'how to' on it from memory.
-
I had the same fault on my old Mk1. I got one fabricated for fairly small beans at Iddon Hydraulics in Stockport a few years back. Don't know whereabouts you are but maybe a local hydraulics/metal fabricator could help you out too.

Yeah that guy at GSF in Farnham is sh1t hot. He used to work there back when it used to be Autocavan - thats as far back as when I had my first mk1 golf gti back in 1989!
Very useful guy to know.

there are enough of us round this area then! we should all go to the shows in a big convoy!

Nice one Marcus. How's it going mate? You still looking after my Denim jacket for me?

Yeah got ya jacket mate, in my wardrobe like!! Nice and clean still  How ya been mate??? Bit crappy news about that fuel pipe a, think I know what I'm doing now, got a Rad off Ebay for 14.99 too, just waiting for it to come through
-
Did you have a problem with the gearbox leaking oil or was it ok in the end?
I've been very busy too, holding down 2 full time jobs at the moment so no time to myself
Still helps to pay for Christmas and car mods
-
Here's the link to the article I mentioned by the way!

Hope it helps as I guess it can be a b!tch of a job with the engine in situ?!
-
i may have the wrong end of the stick here but would it be possible to retro fit a fuel line from either an 8 or 16v mark2?
-
Good question. I have broken two mk2's now and I have deliberately kept all the plastic fuel lines with that in mind. Its a question I will answer as and when I come against the same problem with my cabrio.
-
cos surely they will be long enough! i was just thinking aloud
-
I'm sure someone has mentioned on here before that there is a problem in using the mk2 fuel pipes. It may be that they aren't long enough as the mk1 metering unit is on the n/s of the engine bay so the the pipes have further to go :undecided:
-
one way to find out!
-
^^^you better not be looking on my car
-
doesnt matter dont start anyway and when i did finally manage to start it, man i sounded rough. like it had rust in the cylinders
