Title: danny's mk2 something happend OMG
Post by: danny_p on 07 May 2010, 20:29
was going to dig out the corsa theread and continue that, but now the black mans wang is working golf gets to nest in the garage for a bit,  so here goes some shameless crossposting.

some time ago i broke my golf and it needed quite a lot of small things sorting and they spent quite a long time not getting done.   but i have finaly got around to starting on them.

so here goes.

poorly golf  finaly makes it into the garage.

the old ITB'ed ABF

general aim was to reapair the rot that i know about and find any that i don't know about before it develops.

so motor came out and a bit of battery tray replacement

allong the way the windscreen came out to reveal the enevitable rustworm thats been hideing behind the rubber, thankfully it's not that developed yet.  also around about now it was decided the shell was getting seam welded and a full colour change so the car got a littel bit more striped.

all looking ok on the rot worm department at the moment,  found more soundproofing that can leave :)  and more bitumin sheet thats going to have to leave :(  bit tedious  but an oxy torch and plastering trowel are very effective at getting rid of it.

have a dent to pull int he rear quarter pannel, and a rear arch to replace then crack on and make the spit to get it rolled over as i don't fancy working under it removeing bitumastic stuff and seam welding.  olny thing im not really sure on at the moment is exactl;y how much underseal to put back and what to use, or i may just paint the underside and make an undertray  to deal with the stones and possobly help airflow under the car as it apparently makes a noticable differance

dropped the frount subframe.

dropped the rear subframe

the bare shell now sat on the worshop floor

lee pissing around rubbing some of the newnees of the fault code reader, it din't find any codes or a socket for that mattter
Title: Re: danny's mk2

then we decided to find out just how heavy the shell was, for makeing the spit, so we picked it up and promtly decided it wasent that heavy and we chouldn't be arsed makeing the spit so missioned on.

then went outside and stripped the rear beam down for a bit till it was reduced to pritty much nothing

then i pissed around for a bit hacking things up that you really shouldn't hack up with a gas axe.  see if any one spots it. then gave the golf a quick one wheel conversion

and rolled it for the second time that day.

found pox,  nothing that scary tho it's allready had one arch done the other was going to be due anayway infact it was bought some time ago in anticpation of been needed

then the blasting started.

car much cleaner inside and out after throwing about 1/4 ton of sand and god knows how much water at it. need to buy a dry blaster the wet one shifts stuff but you get wet and it's not optimal.

then gave the shell a quick wash down to remove most of the sand then it went back on the wheelbaroow and back inside.
Title: Re: danny's mk2
Post by: danny_p on 07 May 2010, 20:34
inside the shell after, needs more cleanign yet, going to have to fire up the compressors and dry blast it.

YAY  the nasty bit is nearly all done,  hell vw pile some underseal on golf 2's   it's now mostly on the floor.

loads left to do, and the pikey cheep welder  only cost £30 at local auction,  daft thing even tho it look hanging and knackerd it's much nicer to use than the new one.

was hopeing to finish sem welding the shell today but i had to make an exhaust for an old riley,  then i ran out of ark shiled.

so chucked the ark sheild bottel in the van allong with the O2 as that was almost out, and exchanged the cylinders this afternoon, that way i have gas over the weekend and i'm not going to run out ether as i upgraded to bigger bottels

the way some customers are takeing the piss with credit stretching atm  not a lot is going to happen with the golf for a while.   really thinking very seriously about calling the whole work thing a f**kit and just getting a job doing something else. and just do cars on the side

on the up side the spectial ABF hybrid i've been building is built, mapped, and ready for a car.
on the downside the powerband of said engine isn't going to work with the gearbox i have in there    i need a somewhat lower final drive

the other development thats slowing thins down is it's going to be getting a full multipoint cage if all goes to plan

went for a rummage today and bought some scrap.   so i now have a blown up 6 speed converted 02A box, a crash damaged  5 speed box with aftermarket low ratio final drive ( i think )  and a worn vr6 box that suposedly has fancy diff but in unknown condition.

so now got lots of scrap to take apart and see what bits in it arn't knackerd
Title: Re: danny's mk2

02a box sounds interesting, cool its one of those gemini vw motorsport add ons!

what fd you after? i have a list of cars with 3.9 and 4.2 ones somewhere
Title: Re: danny's mk2
Post by: danny_p on 17 June 2010, 00:56
optimal ratio depends what gearsets i can find but think i,m  just going to need the lowest ratio i can possobly get into the box.
Title: Re: danny's mk2
Post by: danny_p on 18 June 2010, 19:06
well i have sucsessfully managed to release the dragons contaned within 4 gearboxes.  and have a bench coverd in bits of oil gearbox.

good bit is,   the 6 speed unique bits from the 6 speed box are ok,  ( shafts end houseing and the inportant gears )     and looks like it will build straight into my spare 02c g60 syncro gearbox.  and out the other gearbox i have managed to retrive a 5.2 final drive.  so have a good chunk of intrestign parts.   on the downside the LSD   looks like it's been fully value extracted but looks liek it wouldn't have fitted anyway

look at the sand hoopper for the wet blaster.  it was a 13kg propane bottel.   the 1 wheel conversion is golf getting wheeled around on wheel barrow

Post by: danny_p on 21 June 2010, 10:49
the 5.2 is aftermarket.

vw will ahve done a simalar ratio but the part number probably probaly starts with the three letters denoting it's made of unobtanium  vwm.  iirc for 020 boxes you want the FD out of a std rod change syncro box think thats about the lowest factory 020 fd there is iirc

It's defantly haveing a colour change.   it's going to be a really bright gash colour to  purely so the cocks in porshes who have selective blindness have no choice but to see the VW behind them

well the syncro has been adandoned outside for a while witout paint on it,    really shouldn't have done that as it's made a whole load more work for me,  but the workshop1 has been full of other peoples stuff mostly thingying plant equipment like this POS and inbetween them a sick T25 has been in residence as well as countless nasty cars

but since last posting about it workshop1 has recived a few upgrades,  more lights tho still not enough ligts so more lights pending.   the ceiling that we put up the other year has been f**ked off so can get taller stuff in and a 2 post lift.  air supply has been upgraded from 15cfm via 40 cfm  to 170 CFM in total ( 130 cfm from a diesel compressor) theres also some new doors and stuff to fit and leccy supply needs upgradeing again.

anyway  after pokeing the broken audi with sticks decided to have a go at doing something on the golf,  like makeing a start on blasting it.  have a littel shot blaster pritty much exactly the same a this one hanging about

problem with them is there not that usefull, parts wear out at silly speed suffer with cloging up and there a bit slow.  blasting isn't the nicest of jobs so something would have to be done about those issues as don't fancy been there all day doing it. so it got modifyed ( stage 4 infact ),   looks really pikey and crap , proably explained by the fact it is and was all built out of scrap except for the nozzel and the fittings on ether end of the blast pipe

orderd a 10mtr blast pipe for it as that old length of 1"1/4  hydralic hose is a bit short,   addition of the oil /water separator  from an old under van hydrovane is a big feature it's remakably effective in stoping it clogging up

so tested it on a door, this door was black

made a start on the shell than ran out of grit, so will be haveing a ton of ground glass rock up at some point soon hopefully.

so progress will begin to increase when more grit arrives ??

Is the grit expensive ??
Title: Re: danny's mk2 something happend OMG
Post by: danny_p on 28 December 2011, 23:32
when grit arrives,   i should be abel to start blasting in the morning,  and have the inside underside and enigne bay primed in the afternoon,
thinking over the pros' and cons of giveinig it a quick pre prime dusting over with a rust converter.

the grit not to bad in price as long as you buy it by the pallet / ton.  gound glass is aout £160 per 1000KG off ebay  £4 per bag + delivery so about £5.20 to the door iirc

i hear rumrs i can buy ground glass as cheep as £26 per ton tho just not found out where from,  B&Q ether sell or used to sell recyceld glass sand for pavers at sub £2  per bag  so looking into that as got to be worth trying that.  I was a bit naughty with the door and didn't use grit but dryed building sand just to see how well it worked,  ground glass is soposed to be more effective as well as healthyer

littel distraction from the passat.  it would appear something opendthe stabel door and some ponies escaped.

can't be haveing that so a bit of bodge it and scarper,  blast it with acetone and add epoxy

all ponies herded back in, stable door securely nailed shut and securely remounted so it dosent happen again.

as for the golf no much, havent got round to painting the test door yet that should happen at weekend after that can crack on with the blasting side of things.  but some bits did arrive yesterday

got fed u trying to find unf**ked shrouds, collets and holders  so bought a kit thing so should save some time when doing stuff on the golf.  and as ther are going to be a few welds on show thought best get some new gloves so can feel what i'm doing and not end up with a sunburnt hand.

and just because and for tight spots got to have some of these

B&Q ether sell or used to sell recyceld glass sand for pavers at sub £2  per bag  so looking into that as got to be worth trying that.

Was looking at this the other day actually (for paving), £1.65 +vat per bag, 10+ bags @ £1.31 each with tradepoint
