Title: Carpet Mats
Post by: PenguinGTI on 06 May 2010, 23:09
Hey guys spotted these on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SALE-GREY-RED-EDGING-4-PC-CAR-INTERIOR-CARPET-MAT-SET-/250545641495?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a55af1817

they are £3.99 and £5 postage. I'll be playing alot of golf this summer and don't want my mats getting wrecked so picked up a set to use as temporary mats.

i tried using my now somewhat sentimental rubber mats that i bought from Halfords 10 years ago or something, and i find that on the drivers side because of the heel+toe style throttle stuck to the floor, the rubber mat won't fit (unless i cut a section out of the mat...  :embarassed: )
will those actually fit? it doesn't seem to have the cut-out section for where the throttle pedal will go

there is another old thread somewhere here, i guess i'll have to dig it out, you could get the custom made mats and have a little logo on them and comes with the heel thing and you can choose the colours along with the outside trim, i'm considering getting a set of those because the standard mat is already starting to get a bit grubby, i suppose i could just vacuum it but i'm lazy

I've been tempted by the custom mats - I really fancy the GTI logo but these mats are so cheap I couldn't resist.  :embarassed:

I cleaned my standard mats yesterday and find them of rather poor quality....
Are the GTI mats with red stitching and red text on it a better quality....?

I thought it was just me that found the OEM mats and quality to be a bit less than inspiring.

Ewwww, they would be ok for those mk 3 owners with no money, but for us mk 6'ers they are just plain wrong.

Looking at the pictures, I found none of them looked very nice or fitted very well. My feeling is you lose comfort when they are not a snug fit with the seat itself.
There used to be a place that tailored seat covers for very reasonable costs. I will try to dig this infomation if I can and PM you if successful. Might take some time.

Great stuff, much appreciated am1w!
On the subject of the mats i wouldn't buy anything that doesn't use the fittings in the car, the rubbish rubber backing on cheap mats will more than likely do more damage to the carpet by moving around than they are worth.

Thats a halfords cover i use it because if im doing prototype work at work i may get copper greese or heatsink paste on my cloths as i seem to get it everywere and the last thing i want is it on the car seat as it does not come off.
Not a great fit cover as its a little short but a cut of the elastic on the side it fits better, its better than nothing.
I also have a snap on cover but its not as good.

Its a 'Action sport waterproof car seat protector' made by transcal in scotland.

Mines not ment to look nice its for practical reasons only. It is not a permenant cover as such its just there to save my seats while at work.

Not being critical of your seat cover. No offence meant.

Non taken, just letting you know its not a seat cover as such simply me protecting the seat from some of the nasty stuff it may come into contact with off my cloths from work.

The look of mats is very important in affecting the inside look of the car.
I find the mats in my car rather nice. They are very thick and very plush in feel and look. Have I got something better than standard? :undecided:
I don't like the mats with any red on them and that includes the GTi logo in red. I find it a bit too garish. I have a red car and that is red enough! Additionally, the red bits will show the dirt more and could look a dirty red or even brown when ingrained with dirt. I might feel different in a few months, but this is my personal taste for now.

You must have...otherwise you do not know what quality is even if it hits you
