Hi all. I only did 10 000 miles last year . Ive been offered a new job at work but involves travelling up to 600 miles a week . I will be keeping the GTI and claiming 35 per mile .
Any hints and tips for GTIs doing higher milage would be appreciated . I will obviously keep it serviced etc , is there anything else I can do ?
Cheers
ps It is my only concern about the new job , the impact on the VW

Paying £60 for a tank of V-Power, I get average 400 miles to a tank, which works out at £0.15 per mile. £0.35 - £0.15 = £0.20 per mile, which is £6,240 if you're doing 600 miles a week for 52 weeks, or 31,200 miles a year. Now let's say you're going to need 1.5 sets of tyres per year, at £400 per set = £600, so you're down to £5,640 per year. Let's add another £500 in maintenance per year (and that is conservative), and you're left with £5,140. Times 3 years you're getting roughly £15,420 compensation for putting close to 100,000 miles on your pride and joy.
So it depends how much you paid for your GTI, how many miles it had on it, and how much you'd like to get for it when you sell it.
Having said all that, the popular wisdom (which I agree with) is that motorway miles are easy on a car, so the wear shouldn't be too much of an issue, apart from the increased maintenance costs associated with much higher mileage.

Would you not be better switching to a TDI.

Thank for the reply , I love my GTI and its looks , would a TDI be that much cheaper to be worth it though ?
-
By the time you add up the amoutn you will lose pex'ing your gti and buying the new tdi, you would probably be worse off, especially as the mileage compensation will more than pay for the loss in value of the car.
Just enjoy putting the miles on it - don't listen to the tdi devils :)

Buy a small workhorse diesel...?
That's what my mate does... drives a complete shed of an M-Reg Corsa Van during the week and leaves the RS4 for weekends.

Not a bad idea plus you would be quids in with being able to claim 35ppm.
This would be my option of choice.

The car is for enjoying, not garaging!

You think driving on a motorway is enjoyable? I don't.
Just think, dear OP, every mile in that diesel shed would essentially be subsidising petrol for the GTI, or partly pay for a remap.

I would lean towards running an old/cheap diesel, all depends if you have to uphold a certain image with your job or not?
in that case a corsa van might not cut it for you lol!

You Keep the GTI, drive it on the flat bits, push it up the hills then free wheel down the other side!!!
It would take you a while to get too and from wrok, but you would save a fortune

buying a 2nd car i.e. diesel runabout will never cost in !!
best case it will be £2k a year cheaper on fuel...from this saving you need to take away
insurance - £400 ??
tax - £120 ???
deprecation - £2k ???
maintenance - £1k ??
griminess of driving a diesel oil burner when you have a GTI at home - priceless ???
put the miles on the GTI (you are being paid to do it) or sell it and buy a run about ...dont keep both ....
