Here's a thing to do:
http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/historic-inflation-calculator
In the 'decimal' section, try putting in the original prices of GTI's from years past.
As a guide:
1990 Rallye was £17261
1990 8v GTI approx £14k
1990 16v GTI approx £15.5k
1997 VR6 Highline was approx £22k
;)

I tried explaining this same thing on Edition the other day and it went clean over most peoples head. A base spec MKVI DSG is actually cheaper than a base MKII 16v was on launch.

sense
Top post, bang on.
Means that assuming a price now of £40k for a Golf R, it would have come in at £22k in 1990.
That would have been laughed out of the room at that date (although how much was the Limited new?) - the other prices look fine.
-
Limited was £25K new (so circa £50K today). Golf R is only £40K with lots of options, it starts at £30,300.

A mk1 GTI campaign in 1983 was £6949.25

That would be £18068.05 now. Seems the MKI GTI was a bargain!

Apples <> Apples = far too easy.
-
yes agreed regarding the inflation arguement, but back early 90's when u grandads were able to drive we had a REASONABLE government and SOME jobs so people could afford to buy one!

The polo does not have the boot space or interior space of the mk1golf and is bigger outside sadly.
