Title: R32 Alloys
Post by: daaaaaaan on 02 May 2010, 15:54
Hi all!

Just purchased my first GTI and loving it!

My MK5 came with 18" R32 alloy wheels but I'm tempted to 'downgrade' to some 18" or 17" Monzas.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this performance wise and also the best place to get some Monzas / get rid of the R32s?

I've heard 18's can ruin the ride :-S

Hey i dont have a whole lot of experience on this but as far as performance goes the only difference i think will be with the weight of the wheels themselves as it reduces unsprung weight and rotational mass which is mainly on the wheels. So making it lighter and so probably handle better but as they are only standard rims your changing to it shouldnt make much difference.

I think the performace / handling benefits of 17's vs 18's is a little overplayed most of the time tbh.  Can't make that much difference?

Exactly, especially as they are only standards.

Unless you are a hardcore trackday attendee, don't worry about the difference between the handling between 17's and 18's.

There is a difference in the ride comfort, but not much.

Mine came with the ''standard'' 17'' monza alloys & to me they look small on the mk 5. It's the one thing i've never been a fan of with the mk5 17'' or 18'' monza's so i found a set of edition 30 alloys & fitted them.

What ever you do dont get the 17s Monzas. They look sh!te compared to the 18s.

I didnt fancy the Monzas anymore (although I still like them) and went for a set of 18 BBS LMs (wish I had got 19s now)

That extra inch makes all the difference.

At least, if you believe the wife.

lol because they are double dish they look smaller than what they are :( hence the want need for 19.

They also take approximately 17,000000000000 hours longer to clean than the Monzas :D

Those rims are class mate  i see what you mean size wise!

Because the spokes dont go to the edge they look smaller.

The main reason for getting the 18s was the extra cost of getting the 19 rubber, it SHOT the price right up , never mind though aye, I still like them lots so bolloxs :D Ride comfort is so over hyped in my opinion, it really wouldn't make that much of a difference I think, I cant tell any difference between these and my 17s I had on before, its all a bit of a plecedo effect in my book.

Lowering the car will make them look bigger which is on my "list".

Selling them ! You got be kidding haha, I only got to use them for 1 and half months before I got my ban which was a real kick in the teeth.
