I am not happy with the level of tyre/road noise I get on certain types of tarmac. It is especially awful driving on the M4 to Heathrow.
Tyres are Bridgestones on 18" Monza Shadows.
Is there anything I can do to reduce this apart from changing the tyres?
-
It's a diffiicult one to achive that one? The only thing to do would be put 17s on with better tyres!!
Maybe snoopy would do sound insulation ie more spoonges :undecided:
-
I would think all the waxoyling Snoopy has done would act as a sound barrier. Might be an option with dual benefits......
-
Thanks lads.
Just wait for Snoops to take this up!

I know what you meen about the bridgestones mine are noisy too.
To reduce noise.
Sound absorbing foam (felt etc like you fit as underlay in homes). Theres some under the carpet already but no harm in adding more.
Also to stop resonance, damping matt, also as a side benifit in moving the frequency most dominent with noise and reducing noise peaks is products like dynamat, brownbread, etc that the car audio guys use. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/deadening.html
I do actually know some of the tricks that companys like ford, alfa, nissan use in there 'press fleet' cars they send to the magazines

Thanks Snoops. Very useful site.
I will try and do a 1/3 Octave band or narrower analysis with my B&K Sound Level Meter and Filters and then also find out the main source of noise and vibration. It is a pain in the arse. I hate the drumming noise I get when on certain Motorway Tarmac.

I will try my best.
Will get one of my work colleagues to help whilst I drive myself round the bend!
One of the reasons I did not get a sunroof is also because of noise. One can really hear the wind rushing over one's head at speed. Have to drive with the blind drawn which defeats the whole purpose.
-
Not noticed it myself. I do have a habit of driving with the roof tilted in daily use, with the sunroof im yet to even switch the heater unit from off mode.
-
I had the bridgstones on 17" and they were still very noisy. Changing tyres is probably the only option

Damn. The tyre noise is quite maddening.
Which ones do you have, might I ask?

At the moment Dunlop Sport Maxx... but i would not recommend these. Switching to the Goddyear Eagle F1's once these are done with. by far the best tyres available for the Golf imo

You took the words out of my mouth.
Totally agree with this as I have found with my cars that when fitted with Goodyears, everything was as it should be!

Until it got cold or snows

Yes they aint brilliant in the snow or cold, but other than that they are great. Been very bad this last year for cold weather... but i doubt we will have another as cold.. i hope
-
I just hate the tyre noise.
I'll have to try and live with it.
-
You could turn it into a 'press model' and remove the wheel arch covers and fill that void  then put the arch back in but i would not advice it.
Would be interersting to know were the peak is for the noice im guessing 200-300hz.
-
Well you won't believe this.
I had a feeling my tyres were under inflated unlike my ego!
Larger contact area, spring and damper rates affected etc, etc.
Went and checked the tyre pressures.
Car level. Not been driven since yesterday, so cold tyres.
2.45 all around! VW recommend 2.6.
So pumped them up to 2.6 with a foot pump. Checked with 2 different gauges, one digital and one analogue. Perfect.
Drove the car on some rough roads in my area.
Noise levels very much less, enough now not to bother me too much.
Tomorrow I will go on the M4 and hear if there is a reduction in road roar. Should be better, I hope.
Let's wait and see!

I had Bridgestone Potenzas on an old Civic a few years ago, and the road noise from them was dreadful.
My Golf has Dunlop Sport Maxx GT's - and I can't really fault them so far. I'm sure there are better tyres out there, but the GT gets great reviews.

So you feel that the Dunlops are reasonably quiet even on rough tarmac?

Not so sure about that? I have dunlops on mine and on rough tarmac they are bit noisy, but then I have the Dynaudio. The bridgestones are noisy though I also had them on the Type R !!

try some noise cancelling headphones. all the rage these days. you won't hear a thing, not a whisker, not a sound, not a beep, nothing, nothing at all. you may aswell be asleep. goodnight!

They dont cancel out all sound, but are much better at reducing low frequencey noises such airplane engine noise, tyre drone etc. Wear them whilst driving to also look like a prize idiot

There's two Dunlops Sportmaxx's out there now and they are different, so be careful when reading people's comments.
The standard ones came as OEM on the Mk 5 R32 and have not had great reviews, particularly as they get down to the last 4mm or less. Mine got very nosiy and wore unevenly across the tread.
The new GT ones that come on the new MK 6 R - these seem a lot better in all respects from both reviews and reports. So far I've found them to be excellent but reserve judgement until they've worn down to 4mm or less.
-
had my front and back dunlops swapped over recently. the tyre guy showed severe uneven wearing across one of the tyres!! not the first time.. and probably not the last.
a poor tyre imo

I thought we were discussing noise reduction, not tyre wear.
