A friend of mine is changing my timing belt on sunday.
Its an '84 gti.
I heard that the timing needs to be advanced (so in my case it already will have been) for it to run on modern petrol.
is this true? and how much should it be advanced by?
I am asking so that he doesnt look at it and think its been on wrong since i have owned it, then put it on "correctly" and have it not run.
thanks

Timing advance for fuel is ignition timing not cam timing so the belt should be fitted as per the haynes.

As above, fit as per haynes.

If anything the timing should be retarded a bit to run on 95ron, standard timing should be OK if you use 98ron which is the equivalent of the old 4star. As said the timing is adjusted by swivelling the dizzy a bit and not by means of the cambelt.
