Hi everyone I'm new here I'm from Brum 23yr old and am looking for a project to make into my everyday car so I can save my 25th Anniversary Celica, just watched a you tube vid about mk1's an it's help me decide that I want a Golf maybe a Beetle GT (not holding my breath).
Basically I want a project car not somthing OTT but enough to be getting on with in spear time. My problem is, is that I have always liked the mk1 GT and am keen on mk2's as well but I'm woundering which is best (What I wouldn't give to be Harry Hill ).
My brief is no more then £600 an need it to be able to drive home (the affore mentioned Birmingham) from where ever I pick it up from, mostly intrested in 3dr, one that hasn't been messed with would be a distinct advantage, colour not really an issue as for 600 I'm expecting a respray job.
If you can help then please.

mk1 gti is easily cooler than a mk2 but any mk1 gti that sort of money will need some serious work ie welding/new panels
-
What sort of money could I pick a half decent 1 up for?
-
id say something like 1k would get a solid shell that didnt need serious work on it.
-
Thats not bad I could have tat sort of money in weeks.

its a tricky one.... mk1 GTIs are pricey...mk2s are newer but you could still end up paying a grand a clean project... a few years a go i was looking for exactly the same as you, i bought a white mk1 GTI, no welding required, few blisters here and there but was mechanically a little tired... however it never let me down and 6 years on its still on the road with over 220k on the clock... (wish i never sold it)

By the sounds of it the car is best brought in 100% working condition? Which would set me back how much?
If I'm honest I have a machanic friend an I'm sure he would be able to do a Golf. He's been in the trade 30yrs I'm sure he's had a shed load.

Like Shep said, you could get a rolling project for about a grand. You dont need it 100% but you'll want something that works, not something that is barely on the road and needs tonees of welding.

depends what your skills are like, for example if you can weld then you can pick up a dirt cheap mk1 and make a good profit on it or get one for around a grand and only have to sort a few bits on it..

If you spend the extra £400 on a decent one, it might save you some money as you may end up spending an extra £600 just to get it to how ones that go for £1000 are.. if that makes sense?

Yeah well as I said I have a machanic friend anything I find a little to difficult I'm sure he could do. Really as I said not OTT just enough to be somthing to be getting on with a few little odd jobs e.g. window winders faulty, broken head lights just what people just can't be bothered with little M.O.T. failours that level of problem. I'm sorry if I made you misinterprit what I wanted but 1k-1500 should be enough right (hopeing)?

Yeah you should find something for that... start trawling the bay, autotrader etc... hunt that bargain!
