Title: New GTi owner.....and another remapping thread...
Post by: Smurfin on 29 April 2010, 19:52
Hi all

Picking up my new MK5 GTi tomorrow (09, 12k miles, black 5 door DSG with full leather...yum)....soooo excited as it's the first time I've owned what I call a decent, fast car.  Had a GT TDi 2.0 for the last 4 years which has done me proud but it needs work doing to it, so I thought I'd sell it on and put the money towards a new car   (any excuse eh?)

Anyway, although on the test drive I thought it was pretty fast, I plan on getting a remap done.  I can't get it done until July when my insurance runs out (Bell won't touch it with any modifications), but in a way this is good thing as I'll be able to get used to the stock car so I can really appreciate the remap when it gets done.

The big question is, which remap to go for?  I obviously want plenty of power, but not too aggressive unless you really put your foot down (wife needs to drive it too), and I really want the ability to be able to switch between the standard and remap.  Any suggestions?  (I'm in Bedfordshire if that makes any difference to who I go with).

Also, do I need to upgrade anything else?  I've heard about DVs (no idea what it is), and there's been mention of things like milltek exhausts.  How will something like a milltek change the performance (and the sound)?

If I make changes like the exhaust, how will this affect my warranty?  It's got two years left and I don't want to compromise this.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Cheers
Matt

Matt

If your looking to want to change between maps yourself the Revo and i think APR have handsets available with there software (at a cost) and you could get an uprated piston type DV (Diverter valve) they are known to fail on stanard cars! and runnning more boost with the remapp puts alot more stress on the part.

I Have a forge DV fitted, just as a safe measure! it will probably be fine with out though, i just didnt want any headaches

With the stage1 mapp, whoever you choose, will net you around an extra 40bhp and 70lb torque, it will transform this already nippy car into quite a quick car

Thanks :)  I'm just wondering how my warranty will be affected if I start changing things on the car.  Would it be feasible to get my local  VW dealer to change the DV I wonder?

Spoke to my local VW dealer today and they told me unless I get a remap from them (@ £500 no less) then I wouldn't be covered for warranty.  This is Vindis in Bedford...

You can't tell an ECU has been mapped anyway, they're flashed through the OBD port.

Dont need to tell insurance/vw or anyone else.

If you don't tell insurance though, surely you're effectively driving uninsured?

Smurfin, if you get her remapped you must tell your insurance mate!

But i wouldnt mention anything to the dealer though! they wont detect the map on a routine service, ive never had any probs

What company are vindis using for the remapp?

No idea except I've never heard of them.

Now the big question is, which remap to go for?  I want something quite progressive with no big torque spikes, and something I can switch off also.  Any thoughts?

You would probably be better off leaning towards superchips/bluefinn, very smooth map, drives like stanard power delivery wise, but with abit more grunt!

I ended up going for revo, got the switchable handset too! the power delivery feels alot stronger, but not mental! feels alot more responsive than the superchipped car i tried!

Foot to floor the tires will scrable for grip  but in real world driving ie 30-70 and beyond (private roads only) the car pulls REAL hard!

How does the switchable handset work?  I'm sure I heard of a remap which allows you to change maps on the fly, rather than plug in a handheld device and wait 20 minutes in order to run it normally.  If I could switch quickly between maps then a slightly more aggressive one would be ok - I can just switch to normal when the wife is going to drive it

REVO has the select switch which allows you to adjust the settings

Bluefin is the unit you plug in and download

In all honesty for 99% of people the remap suits everyone's driving.  Swapping and changing can be a bit cumbersome

Depends if you want to be able to have some say in how the car runs I guess

Hello,

We can offer one of the smoothest 2.0TFSI maps around, which is very strong and linear across the whole rpm range, no flat spots nor no nasty boost spikes to make the car feel quick.

We dont offer any switch options for the TFSI, I have see some many issues with failed flashes and car not starting because the OBD lead was pulled to early, which in most cased the ecu need to come out of the car to be fixed. The revo switch option is the safest on the market as you dont have to fully flash the map back on.

We can offer a full visual and pc based diagnsotics session, and rolling road setup with before and after print outs. The power gain should be around 38-42bhp 64-70lbft.  Total price is £285 all inc,

And as for warranty dealers cannot void it unless they can prove the remap was at fault and cause the issue.  Its easy for a VW dealer to see if the car has been remapped or not.

Do they ever check though?  I thought with the Bluefin that it doesn't show many times the ECU has been flashed, therefore the dealer wouldn't be able to tell?

I must admit your price looks good (and your rep on these boards), I'm just not entirely sure about the non-switchable part - I've read that some people switch to the standard map when the weather is bad i.e. snow, ice etc.  Is this a problem?  I would guess that the GTi drives like a pussycat when you want, even with it remapped?

Just had a look at your website, and I can't get the idea of a new exhaust out of my head   Would my overall warranty on the car be screwed if I changed this though?  Don't fancy the thought of losing 2 years warranty, as you never know how much it's going to be worth....

I have a REVO chip, which is excellent and pulls nicely constantly through the rev range, would definately recommend. Never been picked up by VW.
