Title: a question from a beginner
Post by: brochwh2 on 28 April 2010, 22:31
ive just bought a bilt hamber kit, wash-clay-wax
i just need some help with the steps.

so to start i wash the car using 2 bucket method with a mitt then dry,
then clay it with plenty of lube,
then do i need to wash it again ?
then, would it be worth giving it a polish with some merr polish i have in the garage ?
then apply the wax and jobs a gud un, i hope

then when i clean it do i need to top up the wax ?

the car is a mk5 golf in silver

any help is much appreciated

yeah... give it a quick wash after the clay just to remove all the dirty water off

if you have bilt hamber clay you only need water to lube

mer polish... hmm... would be ok but would recommend dodo lime prime pre wax cleanser

wax is best if you can apply a few coats... best off if you can apply one coat buff off and then leave 24 hours until the next coat

no harm in applying another coat when you clean it next

after 2 or 3 coats you only need to reapply when the beast stops beading

cheers for the responses guys.
ill give that dodo stuff a try next time i think.
ive noticed that every time i clean my car i always seem to have a tiny amount of grit left on it, ive tried sheeting it of with a open hose and pressure washing it off. what's the best way to get rid ?? because i can imagine claying grit into my car wont be good.

Claying grit would probably scratch it right?
Or create whirl marks?

Must try some of this clay business but I guess it'll take ages to clean doing all these stages.
Waxing alone take me a good couple of hours :( am I just slow?

I use Megs Gold class and currently gives me a nice wet looking shine.

Clayed my car for the first time last sat & was really impressed
took me from 10am til 6pm to do the washes (including engine bay) claying polish & jetseal 109, also wanted to wax her but felt I never had enough time. Maybe the more you practises the quicker/easier I will get

it is a really long day but WELL worth the effort IMO

So with the clay you just keep all clay wet with water and then just rub the clay on the car and that makes it super clean?

Yeah always make sure it's well lubed on both the panel & the clay.

Not just clean SUPER CLEAN  and it will be as smooth as glass just make sure you then apply a sealant or wax or both & jobs a good one

also keep the clay supple by keeping it warm either in your hands or a mug of hot water, dodojuice bornslippy is proberly the best claylube on the market and is very good value for money if you buy the refill and mix it up yourself.

as said above keep the panel well lubed up.

dont use excessive pressure when claying as marring could occur, keep the clay moving and work in small areas at a time.

marring is basically where the clay marks the clearcote/paint where either a too aggresive clay is used and the panel isnt lubed up enough.

keep the clay supple by warming it, keep the area your claying lubed up;)

no need to appoligise mate:) thats what this forum is for;)

yes wash thoroughly, clay, wash over again to remove clay lube/crap etc.

Cheers, and to finish it off?

What do you recommend to keep a nice glossy finish?

I currently use Megs gold class shampoo followed by megs gold class wax which currently gives me a nice wet glossy look.

What would you recommend I use after claying the car also what clay would you recommend? I don't want anything too serious and expensive just something good for beginners that is easy to use.

Cheers in advance for your help and advice guys.

this is a good clay for begginers and wont damage your paint.
http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/I4D_Uber_Lime_Clay_Bar_1.html

and this is proberly the best clay lube on the market.
http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/Dodo_Juice_Born_Slippy_Clay_Lube_Concentrate_1.html

stick with your megs gold gear till you've used it up

to keep it looking nice and glossy, wash once a week if poss and if you have the time after each wash give it a layer of wax or do it every other wash if you want, use a wash mitt not a sponge. dry car after each wash to stop water marks and etching etc.

Cool cheers the info Dan, although i'll find it hard to get round to washing the car once a week

Bit of a lazy fooker at cleaning the car, but when I do get round to doing it I give it everything to get it gleaming and love the feeling of getting it spanking as you know it was your hard work and efforts.

lol!!! once a week is ideal but not essential, yes the pleasure of standing back after you've finished is priceless.
