Carried out a thorough check of the cabriolet in preparation for its MOT having been garaged since 2004.
Everything seems fine. All I can find to do for the MOT is a steering track rod end where the rubber has perished and one of the rear wheel bearings.
Fingers crossed I will have her back on the road for the beginning of May
I suppose it will do nothing but rain all summer now...............
-
That's a bit of luck. Might need some fresh petrol in there too. So we know who to blame if we get a wet summer anyway!

oh cheers rich you've just put the bock on summer then
i still havent had the roof down on mine yet this year for fear of ruining the good weather we're having
-
my rule was 'if you have to open a window then the roof comes down"
also driving in snow with the roof down is awesome :)
-
I can't wait to be using it again. Just going out to the garage now to see whether I can remove the ball joint and save having to buy the whole tie rod and then I'll order the parts.
I was going to try this company: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/ (http://www.vwspares.co.uk/)
Anyone used them before? Their prices seem very reasonable. I've always used GSF up until now but for online ordering they look to be the better option.
Good point about the fuel, it did start and run OK but that fuel is old and will need topping up with some fresh stuff. About 1/4 of a tank left so filling it up should sort that one out
-
..........or suggestions for a better company to use if anyone has a better option.
I'll be ordering some parts for the Mk4 whilst I am at it.
I still do a lot of customer car servicing but for that I have a Halfords trade car and I don't really want to use Halfords for the cabriolet
-
have you tried crazyquiffs? 2nd hand spares but he's been really good for bits on the cheap, like when i needed a new metering head for the cab they sorted me out and posted the same day :)
i've got no suggestions for anything thats practical for the mk1 and mk4!
We have a halfords trade card and they are ok if you're stuck for parts and need a 'make do' measure and the card is uber discount :)

Get it ready for Dubs at the Park, only down the road from you.

Woohoo, ball joint removed without any problem.....now ordering parts.

Hey, you're right. It would be rude not too. I'll pencil that in

Not going to make that unfortunately. Got the steering rack in bits now
The gaitor covering the steering column exit from the bulkhead to the rack has become brittle and holed, probably due to its proximity with the exhaust downpipe. Anyone know where I can purchase a replacement? There is some play in the rack that is looking like the N/S tie rod that is still original! Once this is fixed it's ready for MOT
-
If that's all you've founs after 6 years thats amazing!
Good luck with the MOT!

Checked GPC, couldn't find it.........will try crazy but whilst I have the rack off, £12 well worth it. Will let you know by tomorrow. Thank you.
-
Sounding good this.... hope you get through the MOT ok then... i need a boot for my rack too, my four branch has melted it!
-
Going to buy raferackstraw's. Crazy are out of stock and I can't find them at GPC either.
I'm also going to take his advice and wrap it in heatwrap of some kind. It's proximity to the exhaust is asking for trouble.
I'm off to finish removing the rack, fingers crossed that doesn't need replacing :undecided:
-
Good luck!
-
Rack is fine and now refitted. Replaced the NS tie rod and OS rack boot. Thanks to Tony I have also replaced the steering column gaitor/boot  All greased up and hopefully good for another decade or two
Whilst looking from underneath I have also noticed that the OS (cambelt end) engine mount appears to have perished so I better change that too.
Spent yesterday on the Mk4 with all the brakes in bits. That has its MOT next week and I'm hoping the Mk1 will follow straight after
The Polo then has its Summer Break............well that's the plan
-
Seems to be all sorts of different products out there for heat shield mat.
Which one did you get from Demon Tweeks?

iirc i got a sheet about 12x12" of mat that could withstand 600c looked abit like plumbers mat silver woven foil type thing was not more than £20

This looks like similar stuff:-

-
yep thats similar altho from ebay im not sure how genuine it is :undecided:
i got mine from demon tweeks and used thin garden type wire to secure it youll have to cut a bit of a u out of it to go up behind the boot next to bulkhead then wrap it and overlap it if that makes sense? as long as your happy it will do the job but you do want stuff that reflects heat away from the inside
-
Cheers
I've ordered that one from ebay, it 'looks' much the same and the feedback is good. Its got to better than nothing.
I also plan to change the exhaust downpipe. I currently have the 4 into 1 manifold with the 'C' clips and no heat shield further down near the steering gaitor.
The one I removed from the 'X' reg was a 4 into 2 where the downpipe bolts onto the manifold and it has a heat shield fitted.
I'll wait until after the MOT and then that will be one of the first jobs.
Thanks for your help.

Mines the same as you're x reg 4 into 2. its so close to the rack. will have to copy you with the steering rack boot and heat wrap. how hard was it to service the rack?
-
Hardest part was getting it out! I would imagine it is a damn site easier to remove without the engine and gearbox fitted.
I couldn't get it out through the side despite what the Haynes manual says. No matter what angle I tried it simply wouldn't go. I ended up passing the OS up towards the bonnet and then lowering out through the bottom NS first.
Funnily enough when refitting I did manage to pass it through the NS hole in the chassis. So, there obviously is a perfect angle to get in and out.
I'm now trying to remove the OS engine mount......that doesn't look to be as easy as I first though it might be  Oh well back to it...........
-
hmmmmm, sounds like a pain in the ass to me... is that boot a possible MOT fail if not done?
-

Nope.

Correct, according to my MOT chappie they can only advise that the dust cover/boot has perished.
Not to be mistaken for CV joint boots which are an MOT failure.
Engine mount now removed, had to grind down a 6mm allen key to get at one of the bolts but at least it is at now
-
Hmmmm, just called GSF and they no longer do the engine mount for the 1.8 engine, only the 1.6 :undecided:
Surely, as the block is the same, then a 1.6 mount should be OK. I've ordered it anyway and will take the old one with me tomorrow morning.
Anyone else come across this problem? I'm hoping it is just a discrepancy in their listings
-
PM RJ, he'll know.

PM sent

Yeah I know CVs are a fail... luckily mine are good both ends of the shafts... Good to know the rack boot might just be an advisory though. May leave it for now and sort it later but get the manifold wrapped in the mean time. You're nearly done then!
-
Run out of things to do now. Mk4 is ready and booked in for its MOT on Thursday, Mk1 is awaiting parts, soon to follow
-
Just picked up the mount. It doesn't come with the housing but other than that looks exactly the same.
Fun and games now trying to press the old one out and new one in.
Heat shield matting has just arrived too
-
Heat shield matting fitted, engine mount fitted, MOT booked for tomorrow afternoon.
Shame to have it sat in the garage over this glorious weekend but hopefully there will be plenty more to come
Mk4 passed by the way

Thanks Shaun. Had a bit of a panic today. Went round checking all the obvious and found that the washers didn't work, rear number plate lights and horn! Only had a couple of hours before leaving for work tonight!
Washers turned out to be the stalk switch just needed the contacts cleaning and the rear number plate lights had a broken connection under the boot lid.
The horn seems to be drawing a lot of power, not sure why :undecided: I've managed to get it temporarily working by disconnecting one of them so it's not dual tone but at least it will work for the MOT tomorrow and then I can delve deeper later. I suspect there is a poor earth somewhere......the usual culprit.
-
Good luck!
Nick
-
Cheers,
Cab now insured, Polo now SORN'd and less than 3 hours until MOT.
As you may gather, I can't wait
-
fingers crossed for you rich :afro:
(ps. your old shell is flatted and prepped ready for weld/primer/paint )
-
Thanks Chris.
Have you still got it or did you find a good home in the end?
-
i gave it to my business partner Ben, so i still get to work on it/give input. 1.8T track toy is still the project basis!
-
Brilliant
So glad it went to a good home. Hope to see some pictures soon.
