Okay. I want to get on with some modding of the car, but Privilege (my current insurers) want to whack £350 on top of my existing £250 premium, and bump up my yearly by £58 for the first mod. Second and third as I described them would be included it seems. He wasn't sure after that.
Simple mods:
Quad lights
3rd brake light Hella OEM spoiler
Perhaps tinting back side windows
The problem is that I have a non-motoring related record from just under 5 years ago. So a load of insurers won't touch me. Luckily, it expires in September, and I no longer have to declare it.
In the meantime, does anyone know of a good, mod friendly insurer that doesn't care about non-motoring convictions? Some don't seem to mention it when filling out the quote forms, but then ask it as the LAST possible question when you chat on the phone.

Adrian Flux just gave a provisional online quote of £557. They didn't ask about convictions, but I shall try ringing them later. Is about the same as I am paying now too :)

What do you mean by a non motoring convitciton? As in bugglary, robbery etc?
Wasnt aware this affected your car insurance :undecided:
-
what car is this?
if the modifications you are doing could have been a factory optional extra you dont have to declare them afaik - could be wrong
alan he's been naughty!!!!!

alan he's been naughty!!!!!
So if you have been to prison for example this will effect your car insurance?

Hehe, I read AlanD's reply as "Buggary" :s
It was theft from an employer. Seriously, don't get caught ;) It will roughly halve the number of places that will give you insurance. Motoring conviction or not. I am paying about £150 over the best offer I could get without the conviction. I didn't get any prison time, but was 200 hours community service and some other bits. Best bit was, I had a job within a few weeks from a competitor company :D
I even had some guy having a go at me from one insurance company :D "What did you do that for?" etc. None of his bloody business tho. Meant that I couldn't get the 1 day free insurance from them to get the car home, so had to faff around with my existing company to get the 1 day cover added to my normal cover for my old car.
It is a 2.0 Gti Mk3 btw.

Sh!te. I better return that bic and those post it notes.

It is a material fact that you MUST tell your insurer about. If you don't and they find out, then your policy is void. Try and get insurance after having it cancelled by a company for non-disclosure and see how difficult it is. There will be virtually no-one who will want your business. And amongst those that will you can bet none of them will do mods. So declare until you don't need to. You are likely to find that it shouldn't affect your actual premium, although installments may be difficult to get and you might have a slightly higher excess (although goodness knows why!)

@Horney: One of the stores in the company I work for has just had 2 members of staff (including a manager) fired for taking loo roll for their flat! Don't think any charges were made tho.
@MrBounce: Had no problem with installments. Not seen how much difference it makes to the excess tho (the mods did that).
